    Introduction

    The Impact of Christianity

We know how Christianity has collided with the patterns of the world and it hasn’t been pretty. From the beginning of the church, the world has pushed against the teaching of Christ, perceiving it as a threat to the world instead of what it truly is: A way out of sin and spiritual death. Sin has existed since the end of time and up until the coming of Christ, the world was enslaved to sin, and people were separated from God. The message to all is one of hope and truth. For the purpose of this book, we will only be referencing the New International Version [NIV] (1973/2011) of the Bible, so all citations or references to the Bible originate from the NIV version.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV, 1973/2011, John 3:16).

The verse above describes the circumstances of Jesus’ time on earth. The consequence of everything we do wrong is supposed to be death; we’re supposed to die for every little mistake we make, no matter how small. But because of Jesus, a man who lived a life with no mistakes, who lived perfectly and selflessly, and died the death we all deserved, we no longer face death as a result. In Jesus, death is conquered. He didn’t deserve the death we did—he received it for us. Then, to show that he did conquer death, he came back to life three days following his death.

This is the basis of the Christian faith and the Gospel, the latter which translates to good news. So why is this message so threatening to the world? How can the love of God be something we fear or even hate? A God who loves and wants to save his people from death should be a good thing, right? Even the word Gospel means something good. How can people be so turned off by the hopeful and liberating message of Christ?

People tend to think there is a fine print to Christianity as if there are strict rules to follow in order to obtain this gift. What I can tell you about this gift is that it’s easily received with no gimmicks, no tricks, and no work. What we do give in return is all in the spirit of adoration and gratitude.

The truth of the Christian life is one that’s easier to accept than many people think. All we have to do is accept the verse written above and receive the grace that comes with it. That’s it! Now, I’m not saying that the minute you accept Christ, you’re transformed, but if we accept that truth, we have inadvertently put ourselves on a better path. While the path may not be the easiest one, the truth is easy to receive, the grace is easy to receive, and the reward is great.

Being a Christian isn’t for the perfect but the imperfect, and all humans are imperfect, so Christianity is for all. That's the one misconception about Christianity, that we’re all so perfect. We find our perfection in Christ through the grace we receive. That means any imperfections, mistakes, and any wrongs we commit have been covered by Christ’s death for our sake.

The death we avoid isn’t a physical one; we’ll all die a physical death. However, there is an even worse death we avoid through Christ: Spiritual death. Sounds alarming, but what does this mean? On earth, because of Christ, we have the Holy Spirit. This is God’s invisible presence with us. This was what Jesus left behind for us when he departed the earth to return to God. We have a choice to live a life with the Holy Spirit, the spirit of God, or we can choose to live without the spirit, turning away from the truth of his presence and the sacrifice Jesus made for God to be with us. When we do that, we choose our own spiritual death. Spiritual death is a complete separation from God and no hope of ever being redeemed by Him. That's truly what hell is. It’s not just the torture of
