Vampires have always been my obsession, before the craze known as twilight. I fell in love with the vampires who show no remorse and no care for human life. The vampires I have created, are made with a certain twist. They care to an extent but still become the cruel creatures they deserve to be depicted. With my love of vampires, music has been some odd kind of muse for me, listening to a particular song seems to set the scene just right. some songs have created spectacular fight scenes, while others have helped me write the portrayal of character's emotions, and some even help me get past those pesky writer's blocks

    Sunrise - Belinda Topan

    Prologue

Iremember her eyes , they were blue, like mine, hair, blonde, shiny, like the sun. He always said I had hair like hers. Her smile was warm, sweet. I remember how she held me close and sing me a lovely melody, rocking back and forth till my eyes felt heavy. Drifting into a deep slumber.

When was the last time I slept so well? Laying on a soft bed, resting my weary body, closing my tired eyes, feeling safe in my surroundings to succumb to the unconscious and be allowed to rest. It’s a been a long time since I embraced any of those comforts.

That is the life of the poor and abandoned, we call the streets our home and thieving our craft, we survive through with our wits or die trying. I have known so many people throughout the years, all killed by the hands of hunters and vampires alike. No one in the upper-class would bat an eye, a missing slave got more notice than the typical street beggar, and soon I will be added to the ranks of the dead. God, I am an idiot.

I should have stayed away from the tavern, keeping my hands to myself, my self-assurance and cockiness got me into this mess. I could have lasted another night, but now my time is almost up.

Heavy footsteps bounce off the stone walls, echoing within the hollow cells, I am the only soul locked inside, listening to the rusted chains bang against each other, and hinges on the door creak loudly. I would only jolt awake from the smallest sound, my feet already on the ground, ready to run the unsuspecting danger, my heart racing, pumping the adrenaline through my body. The hunter brings a wooden bowl, filled in a brown broth, with bones, a bit of meat and organs swirling together, with fat lining on top of the broth. The smell made my stomach churn, bile rising into my mouth. I had to swallow it back down, remaining calm in front of the hunter. I grab the bowl from his hands, he gruffs in approval and leaves me to my thoughts once more. I stare back at the contents, hoping to find the answers of the universe inside, but of course, I met with the gruel staring back at me. I half expected an eyeball to rise to the surface of the broth and stare back at me. So this is it, my final hours. I sigh once more, putting the bowl down, ignoring the gurgle within my stomach, I may be hungry, but I am not desperate.  I sit myself down on the cold stone floor in the corner, and the blazing colours of the setting sun, colour the empty spaces. Dusk will soon approach.

My stomach gurgles, if any louder it would echo within the empty halls. Allowing all the hunters in the chambers to hear. I am not touching that gruel.

I’m ready, no longer will I have to thieve and sleep on the dirt grounds, running from hunters and vampires alike. The death may be slow and painful, but I would finally be free from this existence.

Death, I’ve danced this life for long enough, evading all your pursuits to obtain my soul. Looks like we have finally reached our final dance, you finally have one, well-done death.

The sun finally sets upon the horizon, and darkness shrouds the dungeons once more. The hunters clamber together, some holding ropes, another to unlock the door and two more to grab me. They act like I am a monster with so much security.

    Let’s hope it is quick.

    An offer

My arms are tied to two posts on either side. One hunter signals to the other and slowly bringing out the knife, and slowly carving into my skin, slicing through my abdomen, my body burned throbbed as I slump against the ropes, my vision blurred, head throbbed, warm sticky blood pooled out from me, ringing a dinner bell for vampires. Hunters use their thirst as an advantage, capturing poor souls like me and bleed them out. After all, we are a pest to society. I’m lucky to live at this age, fighting, lying and cheating my way through.

It may have been a tough life but a lonely one at that. It’s true what the hunters say ‘no one will miss me.’

Some of the hunters readied themselves as we all heard a low growl coming from the shadows, the only source of light was the lit torches from the posts, only dimly lighting the area. Vampires can see in the dark, humans can’t.

Now I would be in a state of panic, but loose of feeling and light-headedness seem to prevent me from the dread that is death. I didn’t care anymore, I was going to die anyway, they might as well let me die quickly and be a vampires snack. Several vampires launched themselves from the shadows attacking the hunters. Two bolted towards me, snarling for the taste of my blood.  Hopefully, they make it quick. Tiredly as I watch them come closer, claws out and hideously long incisors bared, all charging for my blood. Unfortunately, two hunters noticed there approach and killed them off. So much for a quick death. The battle between hunters and vampires were short, not a single vampire remained, and no other dared to come any closer.

One of the hunters cut the ropes, and I helplessly fell to the cold, dirty ground with a thud. My body slightly ached on impact but only intensified the wounds coming from my gullet. I feel more of my blood slowly bleed out from me. I cough a few times, struggling to breathe, my lungs are filled with blood.

The hunters laughed and passed me by, ignoring my existence, ignoring my suffering.

With all the strength I have left, I pushed myself up and rolled on to my back. If I’m going to die, I rather die looking up at the stars. The stars always seem to give me comfort; it’s as if to say ‘you’re not alone.’

I stared at the sky, feeling my warm blood pooling out from me, and my body beginning to feel numb. I’m closing in on death with each second. My vision slightly blurs, I blink a few times, hoping to have a clear view of the stars when I die but that is quickly short-lived when a figure decides to stand in the way of my gaze. I frown at the man, annoyed that he chose to be in my view.

It took me a while to adjust to the darkness, as I notice his eyes are of a vampire, small black orbs stare back my blue ones. Has he not eaten in months?  Just when I thought I would die peacefully, a vampire comes along to snack on me. As long as I get to see the stars, I’ll let him kill me.

The vampire kneeled down beside me and stares at me curiously, taking in the scene that lies before him. Watching my blood bleed out me slowly, my eyes getting heavier, my breaths shallowing.

The vampire frowned and looks directly into my eyes. I could see the concern in them as he tries to decide what he should do next.

How funny, a vampire, that cares. Since when is that possible? They’re heartless creatures, they don’t care about their own, or us, only about themselves. So why does this one care?

The vampire moved closer and gently lifts my head, resting my body on his arm.

I can save you, he offers. Save me? Meaning he’ll turn me? Why? I’m a beggar, a human, I should mean nothing to a vampire, why would he give me a choice? I feel the grasp of death on my fingertips, and I don’t have long to decide.

Please, I rasp. Hoping the vampire heard my plea, I barely have any time left.
