    Introduction

    I began this writing journey many years ago. I always enjoyed writing poetry and journalism in school. In 1990 I had a frightening bout of metastatic papillary carcinoma. The cancer originally started in the lymph nodes around the neck. It apparently spread to surrounding areas including parathyroids and thyroid gland. The surgeons preformed a total thyroidectomy. They removed forty-eight lymph nodes, three parathyroids and the entire thyroid gland. Numerous complications occurred during the surgery. Doctors didn’t think I’d make it. Apparently, that was not true. God had a plan, and it wasn’t my time to go.

    What happened was I was coming in and out of the anesthesia and overheard a doctor say, Oh my God, is she going to make it? Another doctor answered, I don’t think so, get the ___. I saw something go over my face. It was cold, and most likely pure oxygen. Right after that I
