Momo Pete

Von 2017 bis Ende 2022 lebte Momo Pete auf den Fidschi-Inseln, die ihn schon seit der frühesten Kindheit in ihren Bann gezogen haben. Im Augenblick befindet er sich wieder in Freiburg i. Breisgau. The fable begins in front of an oval bamboo hut, at the foot of an elongated rock wall. It lies a good twenty meters from the beach, in the thicket of an evergreen forest, stretching upward from the coast to the cliffs. Surrounded by ancient mahogany trees, a huge banyan tree reaches far and wide into the sky on a gigantic boulder - towering over everything. Enveloped by more jungle-like, overgrown, giant boulders, the two friends sit on the first set of stony steps leading up to the old hut.

The sky-blue waters of the ocean shimmer through small openings in the evergreen wall of leaves, constantly crossed by a recurring white line - the reef, out in the vastness of the sea, which has surrounded the coast for aeons and against which the waves break, foaming with snow-white spray.

As this still-unwritten fable of the two friends’ adventures comes to life, the overgrown, rocky path that leads from the steps of the old hut will travel with us to the heart of the story. Through a fabulous forest spanning wide ridges, the gnarled, green, millennia-old path turns out to be a twisted thread of pure mulberry silk that slowly unwinds and uncoils, weaving this narrative, fashioning new patterns and bringing them to luminous expression - from step to step, from rock to rock, from bamboo shoot tofu sausage to bamboo shoot tofu sausage.

But we’ve a way to go until then.

Our friends are finally on the road again. Actually, they are always on the move, even though at this very moment they are sitting on the steps in thoughtless silence, serenely looking out at the blue sea with the white waves breaking on the reef. Together, they have walked countless paths of life: crossed gorges, passed through gates, steered ships, built bridges, erected pillars, brought good tidings to distant lands, dwelt in caves, soared in the air, found palaces, slept in temples, entangled themselves in bold adventures of love - but always trusting in the blessing and guiding thread of Vanua Vonu and the perfect wisdom of the sea turtle, Da - Oh!

As always, the Green Gorilla carries his absolute favourite ‘Hanuman’ banana leaf backpack. It is dyed red with Kumkum and filled with plenty of provisions and uncountable stories. He holds a machete in his right hand to fight his way free if necessary.  The Panda, as ever, has thought of nothing at all; has neither feared nor foreseen anything.
