    Night Reich

    Chapter One

They call me the Blue Phantom, and I had a feeling this was a bad idea.

Over the last few months, there had been a series of mysterious murders in Chicago. Not your standard run-of-the-mill murders, either. These were bloody, grisly murders.

Most disturbing was who the victims were. The victims of this rash of murders were other mystery men like me, costumed vigilantes, heroes with colorful names like the Red Mask, the Ghost, and the Black Spider.

It wasn’t just in Chicago, either. Reports of heroes being found dead in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, and even Cuba had been making headlines for months. When my sometimes-partner Red Raven was reported murdered in Chicago, I couldn’t ignore it anymore—for all I knew I was next on the hit list.

My investigations led me here, to the abandoned Trans-Berlin Shipping warehouse. It had been shut down at the start of the war in Europe. Chicago could tolerate a lot of lowlifes, but even Chicago drew the line at Nazis. I wasn’t sure how, but I was certain that the murders were connected to the origin of the warehouse.

Little did I know how bad it really was. I was certain that whoever was responsible was holed up inside.

I tickled the twin, ivory-handled Colt .45s I wore on each shoulder. I know, doesn’t sound fancy, but they get the job done. Besides, it isn’t my shooting skills that criminals fear—it’s my ability to melt, or phase, into the shadows and travel as a part of the darkness. Wherever there is darkness, I can go.

That scares the crap out of scum, knowing that something can come out of
