City of New Orleans - Dusk
Dianna McDunna grumbled as she slogged through the bayou toward where she’d parked her car. She’d spent the last two hours trying to follow up on an anonymous tip regarding a meth dump in the swampy land just outside of New Orleans, but all she’d found was bug bites, snakes, and stinking mud. It was going to take days to get the smell out of her clothes, tempting her to just burn them.
Once she reached her car, she kicked as much muck as possible off of her boots before climbing into the driver’s seat and calling in her failure.
Dianna knew it probably wasn’t her fault she hadn’t found the cache. It was likely the drugs had been picked up by someone long before she ever got out here, but the NOPD followed up on tips whenever possible. The meth in the city lately had been cut with something bad and bringing in a good-sized stash would not only get it off the street, but give the lab something to analyze and maybe a clue as to where it was coming from.
She retied her ponytail and started the car, heading back toward the glittering lights of home. If she hurried, it was still early enough that she could pick up an order of beignets at the Café Du Monde on her way. The thought of the crispy treats and a pile of powdered sugar with a tall iced coffee raised her spirits and made her stomach rumble.
Her personal phone rang, and she turned her thoughts from the pastries, tapping on the hands free. McDunna.
Good evening, Miss Dianna.
The familiar voice filled the car, as smooth as dark chocolate. Dianna’s stomach dropped.
Remy DePardue, a local voodoo priest, but one of the nasty variety.
Dammit.
Dianna scowled. Hi, Remy. What do you want?
Oh now, cherie, that’s not so nice.
Dianna licked her lips,, glad he couldn’t see her face. "That’s because every time you call something bad is happening and is probably going to happen
