Introduction

This book began with an unexpected conversation that changed everything for me. It was 2009. We were on a family holiday somewhere in Asia. Our hotel allowed day visitors to spend their day at the pool, rubbing shoulders with the hotel guests.

I was watching my boys as they played in the kid’s pool. I couldn’t help but notice the steady stream of young tourists in the main pool in front of me. After a couple of hours, I noticed a trend: nearly every one of these young people were sporting fresh tattoo sleeves, chests, legs, and they were predominantly under the influence of Pagan and Eastern traditions. The old and simple tattoos of Love/Hate, the swallow, the skull were gone, replaced now by intricate detail and symbolism.

I must confess, I’m a cleanskin, and I stress, I don’t have an issue with tattoos, but my dad had had a couple of tattoos from his wild days. So for me, tattoos had always been the territory of people like my Dad; bikies/gangsters, rebels and convicts. Now, here in front of me was a generation of Westerners colouring themselves in the traditions of the Eastern world.

With this observation in mind, I very absently asked, What is going on here, Lord?

I absolutely did not expect to hear God answer me. But He did! And I will never forget it.

God answered, You are witnessing the demise of Western Civilisation.

I was stunned. I quickly asked another question, worried that God would get busy running the world again. What does that mean?

And this is how I know this conversation was with God, because He answered with a question, Who are the emerging superpowers?

I replied, Well, probably China and India?

That’s correct, God said, and what will they bring to the world?

I replied, Well, definitely not Christianity …

And then God was silent. And I was left shaken, to the core.

The consequences and implications of this little conversation are enormous and significant. For over a decade, I prayed that God would halt or turn around the demise of our culture. Every year, I called my church to fast and pray for revival, hoping that we would see a transformation of society and a restoration of our Christian heritage. I studied culture and looked for ways to be strategic about how the Church can effectively transform communities and culture.

I rejoiced when Trump was elected, and I dared to believe that we would go back to our Christian roots and be great again! Across the West, we had Trump (USA), Johnson (UK) and Morrison (AUS). I thought perhaps this was God’s mercy to the West. We could root out the corruption and restore the systems that were perverted and godless.

But that didn’t happen. Instead, Covid19 got unleashed, Trump got cancelled, the middle class got imprisoned, and fear and conspiracy took over the airwaves. Again, I asked, What is going on here, Lord?

And God answered me again. He said, I am resetting my Church, in order to reposition them for the next season and to prepare them to reap.

What does that mean, Father? I replied.

Is my Kingdom the first priority of my Church, Paul? asked God. Are there any Joseph’s in my Church who are willing to go to prison so I can prepare them for the palace, Paul? And, If every church were to suddenly reap 100 new souls today, would you be able to disciple them into being soldiers and sons in my Kingdom, Paul?

And, again, nearly twelve years later, I was left shaken to the core as I considered the implications and consequences of this little conversation.

This is the Church’s greatest hour. It’s our opportunity to shine. This is our time to show how to be in the world, not of it, and to demonstrate the spirit of God at work in and through us.

This book is about how we, the Church, are to position ourselves to be of maximum usefulness to the King so we can demonstrate the best pattern for living and a superior culture to a world that is racing to the edge of a cliff.

This is the moment for the Esther’s, Daniel’s, Nehemiah’s, Joseph’s, the (extra)ordinary Christian men and women in the marketplace, to know how to step up and be counted.

CHAPTER 1: Now - The Age of Demise

Understanding the Times

The Bible tells us in 1 Chronicles 12:32 that, in a critical period of Israel’s history, there was a group of 200 chiefs in the tribe of Issachar, who, together with their families, stood apart from their decaying culture and found a better way. They were men who ‘understood the times and knew what Israel should do’.

Today we find ourselves in a similar context to these wise men of Issachar. There is a better culture available to us, one that will produce God’s blessing, provision, protection and purpose. To qualify for God’s best today, we need to untangle ourselves from our commitments and agreements with our culture and, consequently, from our compromised positions within our culture.

This is the time to truly live according to the culture of God’s Kingdom. It is the responsibility of every Princeling in the Kingdom to become not only adopters of Kingdom culture but also transmitters of Kingdom culture.

Watch and Pray

We are told in Luke 21:36 that the Church is to keep watch and pray. So, given that what we observe should be the fuel for our prayers, and with all the authority we are commissioned with, we can become a significant force for change on the Earth in these times.
