About this ebook

The Orthodox Jewish heroine of Hereville must save her sister from a malevolent magic fish in this “consistently clever” preteen graphic novel series (Kirkus).

Welcome back to Hereville, where Mirka, the world’s first time-traveling, monster-fighting Orthodox Jewish girl, faces her greatest challenge yet: babysitting! Mirka just wants to find new adventures, but instead she’s stuck babysitting her disapproving little sister, Layele.

When Mirka pushes her sister into a stream, they both get in too deep with an angry magic fish. No matter how hard Mirka fights this fish-out-of-water, it gets stronger and stronger—and it’s out for revenge. Mirka is in over her head, and this time, her whole family is on the line! When the fish kidnaps Layele, Mirka must find a way to save her little sister, and the clues she needs are hidden in her stepmother Fruma’s past.

Mixing fantasy, adventure, cultural traditions, squabbling siblings, and preteen commotion, Hereville: How Mirka Caught a Fish is sure to captivate readers with its exciting visuals and indomitable heroine.

I've been a fan of this series (and of Barry Deutsch's cartoons) ever since it started. Fantasy orthodox Jewish heroin turns out to be a great combination. I wish this series got more exposure.

Mirka is unhappy to be stuck with babysitting her annoying six-year-old sister Layele. Taking her for a walk in the woods. Layele is afraid of everything in the woods. She thinks a sparrow is a mountain lion and a squirrel is a bear. The only thing she’s not afraid of is the troll. They quickly make friends based on their mutual animosity for Mirka. The troll gives them a magic hairband that allows them to view the past, and on their way home they’re shocked to discover their mother as a teenager bargaining with the local witch for a water charm that leads to a magic wish granting fish!Yet another delight from Deutsch! Richmond’s dramatic use of color and Wallace’s background add their talents to his tale of magic, family and faith.

Mirka is something else. She's the Orthodox Jewish equivalent of Tiffany Aching and if the running of all universes was handed over to girls of their ilk, then things would run smoothly, logically, and with plenty of action.
