About this ebook

I hurried back to where I had left Eldritch. He fumbled with his music, then asked, "What music do you know?" I admitted the only time I sang was in church. We worked hard, enjoyed each other's company and in the evenings, we made music together. With his other hand he took my hand and led me to another

When I was a child I amused myself by telling myself stories. When I left school I was employed as a telephonist until I got married andmoved away. After our children grew up I became a supermarket cashier. Some years later, after I retired, I rediscovered the pleasure of telling stories, but this time, with modern technology, I was able to write them down.

One day when I was on holiday, I found an amazing story I thought you would be interested to hear.

It all began at the Grand Hotel. A place where the upper echelon of society stayed and grand balls etc. were held, where a little young lass was employed. She had made no friends there and she was very lonely. There had been some strange tales and she became curious. Were these tales of strange happenings really happening, and what or who was behind them? She made it her business to find out. She found a way to leave a message and see if it would get a reply. She left a note, not really expecting a reply. But it gave her something besides her own problems to think about.

A day or so later, she crept back to see if there was a reply. To her astonishment the note she had written had disappeared and there was a letter in its place. With great fear and curiosity, she took the letter and found a secret place to read it. The letter just said, Why should you be interested? It has nothing to do with you. Then as an afterthought a P.S. said, If you are still interested, there will be a note in the crevice behind the chair of the drummer at the far side of the orchestral pit.

She could not wait for the auditorium to be deserted. She went to bed with the others, but she could not sleep. Eventually in the middle of the night, she crept out and down below the dance floor. She groped in the near darkness to the far side of the orchestra pit. She found where the drummer sat. Despairing of finding the note, she began feeling around the chair. It took some time before she found a tiny slip of paper. She pulled it out and slipped it in her pocket and ran to find somewhere she would be able to read it, (which was not easy in the middle of the night).

At last she found somewhere where a shaft of light from a streetlamp outside shone through a window. She sat in the patch of light on the floor. It read: I do not know why you should be interested in my problems. But I am curious, which is probably very unwise. If you want to know more, please leave another note, with an explanation, in the crevice where you found this note.

Feeling it would not be safe to keep the note, she destroyed it and returned to the dormitory. The next day, as soon as she was alone, she puzzled over how she could answer the note. She explained that she was lonely and she felt, as she had said, that maybe she could help the writer of the note. After several attempts she secreted the slip of paper on her person and destroyed the other attempts. When everything was deserted, she crept back to the orchestra pit and deposited the note.

She was not sure how long a reply would take, but she was impatient and returned the next night. She felt in the crevice, and to her amazement there was a scrap of paper there. She was about to grope her way back, when she heard a voice. She froze on the spot. At first she thought she had been discovered. She did not know whether to stand or run. The voice spoke again, this time she clearly heard, Come behind the chair and stand still. Do not be afraid. Afraid? She was terrified! But she thought, I cannot leave this here. She stood behind the chair with her heart nearly beating out of her chest. A moment later a curtain in front of her moved and a shape appeared from behind it. In a motion she hardly saw, she was behind the curtain in total darkness. She screamed; a strange hand came over her mouth.

Why did you scream? the strange voice said.

I am terrified of the dark, she replied.

That may be a problem, the voice said.

After a moment the voice said, Which is stronger, your fear of the dark, or your curiosity to know what is happening? She thought for a moment then replied, I would rather have some light, but I want
