to beat a blue bird black - Elle Cox
when I write poetry
i speak with twisted words because
it's all that i know
the world is a thing i
do not understand
but i trust my mind

and i hear my words
burrowing in my head
furrowed and cooning
like a bird in its nest
but broken and changed
and sitting like a duck
when it's just a baby owl
to small to be wise
i trust my words because
it's all that i know
the earth is too soft
against my feet and

gripping my toes
and sigh of relief
my words mean something
even if just to me
so listen and be still
because this
