    THE ABRACADABRA PIRATES

Lizzie stood behind the counter of Abracadabra , her magic shop, and waited.

She hadn’t had time for a full divination, to see who was about to come in through the door.

All she knew was that she’d been happily weighing inventory in the back, divvying up the latest shipment of copal incense into small plastic bags, when someone had called to her.

It had been loud enough that she’d risen and hurried up to the front instead of waiting for the electronic door buzzer to announce that a person had entered her store.

Who was coming? Was it her mentor Abigale? Or someone else? Lizzie had the impression of great power, as well as a stranger. Beyond that, her own innate divination sense wasn’t that discerning.

Lizzie wished she’d had more time. It wasn’t that the shop was messy. It even looked festive, all decorated for Halloween, which was only in a few days’ time. All her wares were set precisely on their shelves, in part because the store wasn’t very big—maybe eight feet wide and sixteen feet long. It was sandwiched in between two other stores on one of the busiest streets on Capitol Hill in Seattle. She also ran a brisk online shop, which made up for half of her profits.

What she sold publically was junk for the tourists visiting Seattle and those who believed in magic but had never experienced it. Sure, a real witch or wizard might use some of the frankincense that she carried, or possibly keep one of the two-pronged knives as a focus implement.

However, everything out front was mundane. The pretty crystal balls nestled in their elegantly carved rosewood holders were just inert glass. Statues of various gods and goddesses were empty, no spirit imbued in them. Even the supposed pyramids of power held nothing of the sort.

If Lizzie had had some warning that a powerful stranger was coming, maybe she would have blessed the door frame so that all who entered would have their luck multiplied: good luck for those with good intentions, bad luck
