Life Changing Universal Verities - AMANDA SMITH
THE STORY OF A MODERN LIFE
Robert. 32 years. United States.
"I wake up in the morning with no desire to live, no desire to go to work. I hate it so much that I just wait for the weekend to rest from my nightmare. I follow my daily routine: I take a shower, I dress, I prepare my lunch and my breakfast, I leave my house. I take the same road to work, the 15-minute route to get there. Sometimes I pass the traffic light and arrive in 10 minutes. I enter the same building that I have seen for 7 years, with its lifeless gray walls, high as walls and with windows overlooking a wall. I wish I had a window in my cubicle just to breathe. I greet my colleagues and immediately we start criticizing the boss and what he said yesterday: we have to get this project out in 24 hours, period. We're all so upset but we have to do what he says, he signs the checks.
As always, my day does not end in 8 hours, but I stay 3 more hours for the happy project, without being paid for overtime. When I return home, tired and fed up with my whole life, I find that my wife hasn't cooked dinner. The noise in the house is hellish. Her screams mix with the loud volume of the television. They're having a police chase, the noise drives me crazy.
I grab my car keys and head to a fast food restaurant. In 40 years of life, I have always ordered the same dish, the only pleasure I have left. I go home and take out a bottle of whiskey. I barely drink two glasses when my wife reproaches me for spending a lot of money, she says that she has nothing to pay the bills with and we owe two months of rent. She drives me crazy and I hit her in the face. I turn around, blaming her for all the mistakes in my life, for not taking care of her and having that girl. I head to the brothel.
I don't have a lot of money, I can only afford about 10 bucks and my drink. At 1:00 am, I return to my house, I park in the garage, but I don't turn off the engine. I realize that there is a lot of smoke now, and I do nothing.
My hands don't move. I can't turn off the car. I realize that I want to die. If I die, this will all be over. All problems will disappear and I will finally be free."
Thirty minutes later, the fire alarm sounds. His wife wakes up worried and takes the girl in her arms. Leaving the house, she notices smoke coming from the garage. Carefully keeping the girl at a safe distance, she opens the gate. A large black smoke billows out of the garage. He catches her off guard, and she begins to cough. Little by little, she sees her husband's car as the smoke clears. Boldly, she walks into the garage and opens the car door. Suddenly a scream of terror wakes up the neighbors. He was dead. He had committed suicide.
How did the story make you feel? At some point did you see yourself reflected in any of the characters? How did you feel when Robert died? Do you think that was the solution?
Life can be so hard and come to such a painful end, that it seems that the last resort is to escape from reality, through the last barrier, death. At some point, this feeling of frustration and overwhelm before the reality that is presented, occurs in every human being, and the impression of not finding a way out of the tortuous cycle of problems. It seems, at first glance, that the world is made to suffer, to feel constantly defeated, to the point of wishing or dying.
This state is a spiritual disease in the human being. It is not the first time that it appears, nor is it the first culture that experiences this chaos outside (the world) and inside (of man).
The world and the problems
If the world's lifestyle could be defined in one word, it would be shopping.
Most people dedicate their lives to the consumption of goods or services to support their existence and role in modern society. In the above story, many traces of the decline of the human spirit individually and socially can be found. Among the themes covered in the story are boredom, reluctance to work, conformism, overwork, family disintegration, the influence of the media on our emotional and mental state, alcoholism, abuse sexual, family and financial crisis, prostitution, suicide, among many others.
If these problems are analyzed one by one, in relation to a historical time, it can be deduced that there is a tendency for them to be repeated, culture after culture, century after century. For example, it is incorrect to say that only in this century has alcoholism appeared. On the contrary, this phenomenon has occurred since the origin of the drink, and just like in our time, it has served as an escape from reality.
Therefore, it must be recognized that these are not just problems of the now. Since past times, these phenomena have been crises inside people. The reason then has deeper roots.
Each stage in the historical development of man can be clearly defined by an existential paradigm, based on social circumstances, technological development, economic and political growth of the State and the application of religious dogmas, among others. There are many historical examples that justify this approach.
In Ancient Greece, the philosophical revolution took place in an opening to dialogue and freedom of expression of its citizens and philosophers. In the Middle Ages, a dark age in human thought, the paradigm of the world was the doctrinal corruption of the word of Jesus Christ, converted into control over the masses through ignorance and poverty.
During the Industrial Revolution in Europe, the paradigm was based on the appreciation of machines as a new element of the sources of work. Our age, as stated above, is based on consumerism as a way of life.
Each culture has had its unique characteristics that made it what it is, but it must be recognized that the problems have always been the same. The circumstances of the world such as its leaders, technologies, beliefs, etc., in its material form change, however the intangible
(problems) remain, and are inside people.
The answer to the problem then has to do with the study of the internal factors of being, rather than the conditions in which it lives. You have to go into the individual, that is, into his soul.
WHAT TO DO TO SOLVE"my problem?
It leaves aside what science can explain with its theories and its studies on human psychology. The fundamental question, the one that every philosopher has asked himself in order to find answers, is not how to stop my problems, but who am I?
It is the greatest dilemma in man. Many have tried to explain it, to understand it, to turn it into knowledge. But words cannot describe it. Not even a general concept could come close to the truth it represents in the individual. In each of us. However, there is one element in common: the problem. The problem of living, of pain, of disappointment, of despair... of suffering.
We are all different, but the problem is the same. So there is something that unites us. Something that goes beyond physical appearances and the senses. It is within each of us and affects our reality as a society. And it is necessary to face it in order not to suffer more, without dying.
PURPOSE OF THE BOOK
After the experiences I have lived, one of the problems
made me change my whole being. One of those events that makes you value everything again. Sometimes you forget and go on with your life. And in others, something changes and nothing is ever the same. That is my case.
I share with you reader reflections whose purpose is to enlighten you to change your life, to a reality where you can enjoy who you are.
My expectation is that within 21 days, using simple, easy and effective activities, you will open your eyes and be moved to discover yourself. I warn that the road does not end there. If life ended at the moment of being happy, it would not last long in this world. Your life goes beyond this simple book, and this is just the beginning. I pray for you and wish you a good path. Go ahead.
How to use this book
The book is designed to provide reflections, including: what is the main problem in life and ways to change the current situation in which you live. These reflections are accompanied by activities, designed for the person who has little time available during the day. The book doubles as a diary. It is intended that you honestly answer certain questions during the reading of the book, and that you write your answers in the book.
Don't be afraid to scratch the book.Writing inside the book is a way of interacting with yourself, it will be the record of your current thoughts, so that in the future, you can analyze yourself and get to know yourself better. Another reason for writing in the book is that I don't want you to share it. Imagine that it is your personal diary, and in that case, you would not show it to anyone. It's just for your eyes to see.
The book is divided into four parts, which must be followed in order:
Problem:In this section, the general problem of all human beings is presented, and you will be asked six questions that you must answer to define and diagnose your situation.
Solution:The way to solve the problem is shown, including some personal exercises.
