Chapter One:
Helping Hands
Chilly January rain didn’t dampen the spirit of Rut Roh as he helped in the kitchen. His puppy attention was riveted on Breonna as she sliced a mushroom. The mushrooms were going to be scattered over four pork chops that Ellie had carefully arranged in a glass baking pan. Ellie was Rut Roh’s older sister. She was a much-loved stuffed yellow elephant. Beside Ellie was their tiny white kitten sister Starburst. Her job would be to place the green peppers on the pork chops. Starburst took this job very seriously. She might be the youngest, but she wanted to learn how to do things well. The final member of their cooking tribe was a violet bunny named Miss Nibblez. She was in charge of sprinkling the chopped onions over the pork chops. Tonight, the friends were cooking pork chops for Breonna’s sister Samantha. She hadn’t been feeling well lately, and Rut Roh knew Breonna wanted to see her sister happy. Rut Roh also knew Breonna was praying for Samantha.
Breonna went on to explain dinner would also include baked apples. Rut Roh sniffed the air in puppy appreciation. He could already imagine the smell of apples baking in cinnamon and walnuts. Breonna laughed at the pure puppy delight on his face. She knew his vivid puppy imagination was already painting a picture of apples swimming in cinnamon and baking in the oven. Starburst was looking forward to carefully adding in the dried cranberries. They were her current favorite fruit. Miss Nibblez would finish the baked apples with a pawful of chopped walnuts.
While they worked, Rut Roh could hear a familiar CD playing in the background. He glanced over at Starburst. Her kitten eyes were glowing. She knew what song was coming up next. Rut Roh turned his puppy eyes to Breonna and he saw she was watching Starburst as well. Starburst loved to sing and dance. Her current favorite song was sung by Ron Kenoly. Starburst enjoyed the Caribbean accent, and she could mimic it perfectly. Rut Roh knew there was a battle between God and Satan. It made Rut Roh happy to hear that Jesus was the winner, man. He was reminded that, no matter what, God’s Got This! His puppy paws tapped to the rhythm of the song. Starburst’s squeaky little voice sang along. As she sang, the pink bow on her head quivered. That made them all giggle.
The final preparation for dinner was a vegetable mixture of broccoli and carrots. Ellie carefully poured the mixture into a pot filled with water. Miss Nibblez added a sprinkle of garlic powder. That completed the dinner preparations. Breonna gave each of the four friends a kiss.
Thank you. You were great helpers,
she said. Her simple words of praise made each of them smile. I’m sure Samantha will appreciate you making dinner.
After they had helped tidy up the kitchen, Rut Roh and his friends decided to shoot marbles while they waited on dinner to cook. While they played, Donald arrived home from work. He kissed Breonna and took off his jacket. Rut Roh yipped a happy hello as he wagged his stubby little tail.
Hey! My favorite mutt. What’s for dinner tonight?
Donald asked as he hung his jacket on the coat rack to dry.
Pork chops and baked apples,
Rut Roh proudly responded. He was waiting patiently on Starburst to take her turn. She was the youngest, but she liked to always try her best.
We also made broccoli and carrots,
Miss Nibblez said. Her nose twitched at the thought of carrots.
Donald smiled down at her. It was no surprise to hear Miss Nibblez liked carrots so much. She also savored strawberries.
Are you all going to go and deliver this dinner?
Donald asked. He smiled again at their enthusiastic response. Rut Roh was the most seasoned traveler of the bunch.
Donald was pleased to see how happy they were. He thought they would enjoy the short journey because they had helped prepare dinner. Starburst reached over to wrap her tiny white paw over Donald’s finger.
Thank you,
she said.
It wasn’t too much longer before dinner was served. Donald prayed over the meal and everyone began to eat. Donald complimented the furry chefs on a job well done. Ellie beamed with pride. She couldn’t wait to deliver the meal and have Samantha taste it. Ellie had always enjoyed baking, but cooking dinner was something new for her.
After they had eaten and the kitchen was tidied, Rut Roh and his friends helped pack Samantha’s dinner in a blue bag with a friendly looking seagull on it. Donald had brought a special surprise to include. He had stopped and bought a bottle of blackberry ginger ale. It was Samantha’s favorite holiday drink. He knew it was no longer Christmas, but he
