Beachcomber toasting a martiamellow over a log fire on the Shoreline of Infinity. Art: Mark TonerThis month we begin a new feature in Shoreline of Infinity - a serial! This is something I’ve always wanted to run from the off, but when the magazine was quarterly only, that would have been quite frustrating. Now we are doing a monthly digital issue, Shoreline of Infinity Monthly, as it were, this was a perfect chance.
In this issue we publish Episodes 1 and 2 of a specially commissioned serial Approaching Human by Eric Brown. This runs from March until July inclusive.
Further, thank for support from Creative Scotland, we will be publishing the episodes online for free after the first publication in digital format.
Approaching Human started as a short story Eric submitted to Shoreline. I’ve christened it AI noir*, set in an alternative 50s USA, featuring an AI Private Investigator on the case of a women looking for evidence on her unfaithful husband. Of course, all is not as it seems...
In this issue we also feature the winning story by Christopher R Muscator of a solarpunk competition run by Extinction Rebellion called The Solarpunk storytelling Showcase. At the time of writing, with Russia trying to knock seven bells out of Ukraine, things are looking pretty bleak. But there is always hope for the future, and solarpunk is the science fiction sub-genre to explore options where humanity does succeed in living in harmony with nature. Lottie Emily Dodd, one of the competition organisers, explains how and why the idea came about for this competition. It seemed only natural for Shoreline to provide a home for this story, with its accompanying artwork by Dustin Jacob. We will publish two more winning entries in future issues.
Happy reading, people.
*I have Googled this, but can’t find any other uses of the phrase.

Black and White Woman, 1950w styleHe came to the office in person , which was unusual. These days, I see most of my clients in VR.
She was small, blonde, and nervous. I could tell from the way she sat down across the desk from me, fingering the hem of her Versace bodice.
How can I help, Ms…?
"Professor, – she was quick to correct me –
Professor Mona Taylor."
I did a quick scan, dredging the Cloud for her personal information: Professor Desdemona Lila Taylor, thirty, with tenure at Caltech; married once, in her late teens, to an American Space Agency astronaut. The marriage ended ten years ago when he left on a one-way mission to Mars. She had a first-class degree from MIT in neurobiology, and was the author of a leading monograph in her field.
All in all, a smart cookie.
So why did she need my services?
I’ve been seeing this jerk for a year,
she said, a big-name attorney who heads a company in the city. He was good to me at first. Call me naive, but I thought I’d found the man. He was kind, caring, and faithful. Well, I thought he was.
