Book Preview: #1 The disease or condition you have is already happening, but there are many things you can do to slow or even reverse your symptoms. Medication can’t take away your autoimmune disease, but your body can heal itself if you give it the tools.

#2 If you don’t understand what your body needs to function and heal, you can’t make wise decisions about what you should do to keep it going. You might decide to take someone else’s advice about diet, but unless you understand what your body needs, you won’t know what advice to take and what advice to leave.

#3 Your cells need certain nutrients in order to function properly. If you aren’t providing those nutrients, your cells won’t work as well, and a malfunction at the cellular level could eventually impact any aspect of your health.

#4 The majority of conditions are caused by the interaction of multiple genes, which shift the efficiency of our enzymes in response to our environments. Through optimal lifestyle choices, we can keep the most harmful genes in the off position and the most health-promoting genes in the on position.

    #1

The disease or condition you have is already happening, but there are many things you can do to slow or even reverse your symptoms. Medication can’t take away your autoimmune disease, but your body can heal itself if you give it the tools.

    #2

If you don’t understand what your body needs to function and heal, you can’t make wise decisions about what you should do to keep it going. You might decide to take someone else’s advice about diet, but unless you understand what your body needs, you won’t know what advice to take and what advice to leave.

    #3

Your cells need certain nutrients in order to function properly. If you aren’t providing those nutrients, your cells won’t work as well, and a malfunction at the cellular level could eventually impact any aspect of your health.

    #4

The majority of conditions are caused by the interaction of multiple genes, which shift the efficiency of our enzymes in response to our environments. Through optimal lifestyle choices, we can keep the most harmful genes in the off position and the most health-promoting genes in the on position.

    #5

Epigenetics is the science of how the environment determines which genes are active, and it determines your risk of developing a chronic disease. The key is to know how to shift the odds toward achieving the most optimal health, given your genes.

    #6

The scientific term for a mutation in a DNA sequence is single nucleotide polymorphism, or SNP. We know that people with specific SNPs that affect the production of enzymes for handling the B vitamins or sulfur are more likely to have heart disease, brain disease, mood problems, and/or autoimmune problems. But you can turn off those harmful genes and turn on the most health-promoting ones by making healthier choices.

    #7

The food you eat has everything to do with how well your body functions, whether you develop a chronic disease, and how well you can come back from the disabilities that a chronic disease has inflicted on you.

    #8

The cell is the smallest unit of life that can contain the information needed to sustain it. It is the heart of the organism, where all the information lives. However, there are other things floating around in that cellular space, including the engines that power the cell.

    #9

All cells in your body contain mitochondria, which produce a compound called ATP that stores energy in the bonds between its molecules. ATP helps your body create proteins and antibodies. It is the fuel used to power the chemistry that is used by your cells for all they do.

    #10

The mitochondria need certain things to produce ATP efficiently: glucose or ketone bodies from fat, oxygen, and thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, pantothenic acid, zinc, magnesium, iron, and manganese.

    #11

Free radicals are molecules with an open place for an electron that creates a dangling bond, which makes them highly chemically reactive. Antioxidants are compounds from plants that act by stimulating the production of enzymes that will neutralize those free electrons before they can damage our cells.

    #12

There are a few signs that your mitochondria aren’t getting what
