    The Sheriff’s Son

It was rainy outside. The sky was a grayish color. Rendon pulled back the curtain and looked at the clouds coming in. This wasn’t how he had planned to spend his day off. It wasn’t like he ever really seemed to get a day off anyway. Being the sheriff’s son and one of two deputies, it was his shared responsibility to keep the small town of Brackford and all of its approximate three thousand citizens safe. While the sheriff’s jurisdiction extended into the rest of Sarfield County, Rendon’s father lived in Brackford and spent most of his time here. It was a small county, and Brackford was where the majority of Sarfield’s citizens chose to reside.

Rendon closed the curtains and resigned himself to sit down in his recliner and turn on the television. At least, housing was affordable here. His small house wasn’t much to brag about, but he had gotten a good deal on it as a fixer-upper. Of course, his father had helped him with the down payment. The payments were low enough that it would have been hard to find a place to rent any cheaper than what he paid to have his own house.

It was a small home with two bedrooms, if you could call the tiny second room a bedroom. At least, it fit the twin bed and dresser comfortably with a little extra room for whatever furnishings Rendon might decide to add in the future. He would have probably just used it as a den had the house not come with the bedroom furnishings. The person who had sold him the house had had to move suddenly and was more than happy to include them in the sale. Rendon had thought about selling the furniture, but he didn’t think he would get much for it. He didn’t really need the den right now anyway. Being single, he had the whole house to himself. On occasion, a friend would stay over when they had a heavy night and drank too much. The guest bedroom came in handy then, seeing how his sofa was about the most uncomfortable piece of furniture that had ever been crafted.

Rendon flipped through the stations. There was nothing good on television. He only had basic channels and didn’t subscribe to cable or any streaming services. He used an antenna to get what few channels he could. He liked to keep costs down, trying to save up money for the future. His cell phone was an additional line on his father’s plan. He simply gave his dad the extra thirty dollars every month. That made his cell phone bill reasonable. Even so, he didn’t have a large data plan, so he had to be careful how much browsing he did on the internet with his phone. He didn’t have internet access or a computer at home. He did the majority of his internet surfing using the computer at work although he didn’t have a lot of need to be online much anyway.

His father, James Carlson, had been sheriff for Rendon’s whole life. It was all that Rendon knew. Apparently before Rendon was born, his dad had worked in a hardware store for a short while before becoming a deputy and working his way up the law enforcement ladder. Everyone loved his dad, and no one could imagine anyone else being the sheriff.

Rendon’s friend, Ed, was the other deputy. Ed was a good man and had
