Crissy Moss is an author of multiple short stories and three fantasy novels, you can find more about her at CrissyMoss.com. Crissy Moss grew up in the rural California foot hills entertaining herself by playing with the dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and geese that lived on the family farmstead. Since then she’s lived in four states, and traveled to most of the lower 48 meeting people from every background. Today she makes her home in Washington near the bustling city of Seattle. She loves the rain, warm fires, and sipping coco. She also loves to dive into fantasy books filled with magic and mayhem.  She started writing when she was seven years old, publishing her first essay in 1995. It was an interesting time as websites started offering more content. First newspapers, then magazines, and finally books became easier to get online. And in the midst of it all writers had to adapt, too. Her writing is eclectic, ranging from fantasy and sci-fi to a bit of horror and paranormal. But she always endeavors to spin an interesting yarn.  She has also been a co-host on podcasts like Self Publishing Round Table, Story Telling Podcast, and the Bradbury Challenge.  She currently has several short story collections and books available on Amazon and dabbles in art. Follow her on twitter at @crissymoss or on Twitch where you might catch her writing.

    Dark Angels - Crissy Moss

    Flames

    She burned.

The flames licked up her skin, lapping up the oils and flickering along her spine. Her arms blistered, her skin sloughed away in great rending tears.

I could smell it from across the river. The rancidness of human flesh burning. The pungent aroma of hair charring to a cinder. The fats and oils melting away faster than a candle.

And all the while that she burned her body replenished itself, never quite burning out. Never charring so completely as to give her rest, freedom from the pain. She kept burning, the flames encasing her. Hungry and alive, they craved more flesh. They burned away, feeding off her very soul, siphoning off small sips that would replenish over and over again.

I could feel my muscles tensing as I watched her burning, a sea of flames separating us. She didn’t deserve this. How could He do this to her? How could the others let Him do this?

She had been created as a strong, vibrant being with desires and dreams of her own. Something my brothers and I lacked. Or so we’d been told.

If I could not desire then why did I want to help her? If I had no thought of my own then why did I feel this need to run to her? Protect her? Take away the pain He had given her.

Standing there, watching her burn, I felt the stirring in my heart grow, overwhelming inside of me. This wasn’t right, and I couldn’t let it happen.

I stepped into the flames. Pain seared through my flesh, eating into my feet and crawling up my legs. Fire engulfed me, never burning completely. Never consuming me. The fires were meant to burn for all eternity, tormenting not consuming.

I took another step across the coals, and something inside my chest tightened. A felt a pull, than a yank, as though someone were trying to bring me out of the flames. I fought against it, determined to set this wrong to rights.

Another step and the pull got stronger, but I had already learned the lie. I had been told I could never disobey, that I did not have the free will that man had. But the very fact that I could step into the flames at all meant I had self determination just as they had.

The pain sunk deeper, reaching into my soul to try and pull out what grace I had. But I had endured far worse
