Hugo's Huge Feet - Kath Kirkland
Introduction
Thank you for choosing Hugo’s Huge Feet. I have had lots of fun writing this book for readers such as you.
I have always enjoyed reading and, now, I also enjoy writing. I grew up reading books such as those by Roald Dahl, Mary Norton and Enid Blyton. Reading lots of books has helped me understand the English language and given me the ability to write.
When I was at school, my mother was a children’s author. I would return home from school every day to the sound of her electric typewriter, clicking away, loudly. I am very old and computers didn’t exist then! My mother would ask me to read all of her stories she had written and then ask me if I enjoyed them. I was very privileged to be able to do this and this has now given me the desire to write and share my stories with my own son.

Chapter one
Hugo's new school
Hugo Lark was a young clown.
His dad was a clown, and his granddad was a clown. The family had been clowns for hundreds of years. Making people laugh was part of
their family history.
Are you ready to go, Son?
Hugo's dad asked him.
Hugo shook his head.
I am sure it won't take long before you make new friends,
Dad tried to reassure him.
I don't want to go to a new school. I like my old school,
Hugo sighed.
I understand, Hugo,
Dad said. But now the circus has closed, the clown school has closed too. That is why you need to go to school with other children.
This uniform is boring. Why can't I wear my clown suit?
Hugo asked.
You look smart,
Dad said.
Hugo sulked. I don't want to be smart. I want to be funny.
You'll always be funny. You don't need to stop being funny because you’re not a clown.
Hugo squeezed his bow tie, which squirted water into his dad's face.
––––––––
When Hugo and his dad arrived at Hugo's new school, Hugo stood and stared at the size of the school. He had never seen a building as big as that before. Hugo's old school was behind the circus big top in a caravan.
There must be hundreds of children at this school. I was at school with five other children,
Hugo said.
Hugo's dad smiled. At least you’ll have lots of children to make friends with.
