Dele Andersen

My name is Dele Andersen, and I am also known as D.A. I am a young adult short story and novel writer. My stories and writing style combine the supernatural or the fallen with love, paranormal, faith, belief, and courage. My stories are extremely captivating; the stories make readers turn each page of their book without the knowledge of time passing or the desire to end the story. The stories create so much suspense that make readers perplexed as they read on, trying to untangle the plot until the last page. Outside reading and when I am not writing, I enjoy family time with my spouse and four boys who keep me busy and the house very occupied. As you'll probably guess; boys are into their games so you can imagine what it is like when they are locked in a video game on the weekend; the screams, the cries, and the frustration they display...I am already smiling. Except for my deep family time, I also enjoy watching a Lawn Tennis match and playing chess. I like soccer, but I would not call myself a die-hard fan. My writing style is socially acceptable and my stories are readable by a wide range of age groups from 12 to 70 or even older.

    Prologue

The world twirled in Xavier’s eyes. Xavier did not see the demon that came and struck him from behind. All he felt was his sudden crash into the wall before he passed out, leaving his friend Marcus to fight alone.

A loud scream resonated in his ears, dragging, Xavier back to reality. While he tried to gain full control of his environment, he wondered what monster had knocked him out.

The scream that had awoken him came again, louder and more horrific. Celina!  The hunter had found her. Xavier looked through the cracked wall of the room and saw the man dragging Celina out of the house.

    Don’t! Celina shouted. No–No!

With his vision still fuzzy, Xavier saw Celina stretch out her hand toward the other end of the room as she screamed. Between the horrific scream and outstretched hand, Xavier knew something was happening in the house.

Xavier remembered he had left Marcus on that side. He looked in the direction of Celina’s hand. The shadow of a huge figure stood where Marcus should have been, but the wall between him and Marcus obstructed his vision. He didn’t know what the creature was or if Marcus was still there.

Xavier tried to get up, but the pain was too much. What was happening on the other side of the room? He needed to get to Marcus. He felt the wetness on his face when he tried to get up. His hand went to his face, and he knew he was bleeding the moment he touched it. He pushed with all his strength and got up. Celina’s voice came again, shouting at the man who had hunted her. He turned toward the door in time to see Celina pulled away as she continued to scream.

No, you can’t leave him there. He is your friend! she yelled.

He made his choice to stand against me, and he hid you away for years, the man said, his voice intense with anger.

Bathe. . . ? Xavier said in confusion. He thought he heard the voice of his friend. He stretched his hand toward the door where Celina’s voice had come from. Within a few seconds, his vision became clearer, and he forced himself up, walking toward the broken wall a monster had crashed through when they fought. Then he saw Marcus on the floor.

Marcus! Xavier rushed to his friend. He was bleeding profusely.

Oh, God! he exclaimed, seeing a deep wound on Marcus’ temple as he turned Marcus over. I have to get you help, he said anxiously. Marcus’ breathing was slowing down significantly.

    Where is he? Marcus breathed.

Who? Xavier asked. Marcus must mean the person who took Celina away. He’s gone. He took Celina with him.

We have to get her back . . . Marcus grunted.

Don’t talk, Marcus. Xavier looked around the room for anything he could use to help his friend, but he wasn’t familiar with the house. He didn’t know if there was any healing ointment. Marcus had invited him to the house to protect Celina, but Xavier had never been there before the day of the battle.

Marcus pulled him closer. Xavier bent his ear toward his longtime friend.

We have to get her back; the lives of the children depend on . . .

Let her go, Marcus, Xavier pleaded. You kept her for years. You have to let her go.

We can’t. Marcus coughed. A tiny bit of blood came out of his mouth. Take care of the children. Marcus began to cough again.

    What children? Xavier said, bewildered.

The children with the Chosen traits. And my children. Marcus pointed behind Xavier. All three of them . . .

Xavier looked behind him quickly. An open door led into a dark room. He looked back at his friend, wanting to ask why he pointed toward the room behind him and why he had said three children. Marcus had two children, Jason and Wanda. He knew no other child. Immediately, he guessed the rumors that Marcus had a child with Celina were true. He knew Marcus had kept Celina away for years, but right now Xavier wasn’t concerned about rumors. One of his closest friends was dying.

And Wanda. Marcus coughed out the words, his body convulsing.

    What about Wanda? Xavier said.

Marcus coughed again as his breathing weakened. Celina . . . Wanda will destroy the Chosen children. . . . He stopped.

    What? Xavier said.

Make me a vow, Marcus said very faintly. Protect Wanda, protect the children . . . Marcus raised his voice. Vow, he said as loud as he could.

I vow to protect Wanda, Xavier answered quickly, even though he knew that as a Vitrian, vows were binding. Also, Sofia and Jason . . . stay with me, Marcs, he said, using Marcus’ old teenage nickname.

Keep my children away from Ake...uah. The words came out so faintly that Xavier struggled to understand it. The curse will destroy the Chosen.

Ark . . . Xavier mumbled, trying to understand what his friend was saying. He had never heard the word Akeuah before, not in North America, his homeland, or in Norway, where he’d relocated.

    What curse? Xavier asked.

    But his friend was motionless.

    Marcs? Marcs! Xavier shouted.

    His friend was gone.

Xavier raised Marcus’ head gently to confirm that his friend had crossed over to the other side. Tears trickled down his cheeks as he shut his eyes in anger, then he laid his friend down.

Rest, my old friend. Xavier spoke the words from the depths of pain. He placed his hand on Marcus’ eyelids and closed them.

He got up and walked toward the wall he’d come through when he regained consciousness. Still vexed, he placed his left hand on the wall. He found his phone with his right hand and made a quick call.

Marcus is gone, Xavier said when the call was answered.

What? His partner sounded surprised. What do you mean, gone? What happened?

I don’t know, Xavier said. He was still trying to manage the anger in his voice. I was knocked unconscious; I didn’t see what happened or who did it. I only heard Celina screeching. I guess that was when it happened.

    No. Not Marcus.

Marcus wants us to protect his family. That was his dying request.

    I’m coming.

It’s too late now, Xavier answered. But vow to keep Wanda, Jason, and Sofia safe.

Are you sure he is dead?

Yes, Xavier replied, almost shouting the words in annoyance. Marcus is dead. He is gone! There is nothing we can do now . . .

Suddenly, a loud cry came from the room Marcus had pointed at. The door was directly behind him. He turned at once and faced the room.

He switched the phone off, cutting his partner off mid-sentence. There was something in the room, something that hadn’t been there when Marcus pointed at it. He squinted his eyes, and then an astonishing shock hit him. Marcus’ body was no longer on the floor.

There was no sign of dragging or Marcus crawling. The body was just gone, leaving traces of blood on the floor like he had vanished from the spot.

An unusual sound came from the dark room opposite him. He turned and readied himself for whatever might emerge from the room. He couldn’t see who or what was in there; all he knew was that it was big. It groaned in an angry, deep voice.

Marcus? he called. Had his friend found a way to move his body and transform?

The thing in the dark room turned and looked in Xavier’s direction, its demonic eyes fixated on him. The man who came for Celina must have sent one more monster to finish them all. He had lost his Praying Méndez in the battle before he got knocked unconscious, so he brought out a Vitrian weapon. The Vitrian symbol glittered brightly in his hand, signifying the presence of a monster.

    Chapter 1

The complex puzzles that had taken over Wanda’s thoughts were apparent on her face. She squatted on the mountain top she had just run to with all her strength to save herself from the creature Eric had metamorphosed into. She knew she had caused the transformation. She had brought out a witch-stone that made him change involuntarily. Alexis had promised her it was a blessed stone, but it was a witch-stone from the Abyss to help aid the monster within Eric to go wild.

In just a few days, Wanda’s life had totally changed, and it had indeed been a confusing situation for her. She had suddenly developed the ability to see demons, making everyone think she was the Chosen child according to the Vitrian prophecy. The prophecy was given centuries before, and everyone thought it was dead.

Wanda was also on the verge of losing her brother, Jason, who was in a coma. For him to be healed, Wanda needed to retrieve the stolen Healing Méndez from the rebels. The rebels were vicious humans who used sorcery and sent demons to attack the Vitrians. From the moment she started seeing monsters to the time when she arrived at the Vitrian Fortress, Wanda had suspected Bathe was the culprit behind the monster attacks. but after watching him fight with all his strength to save her life, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

Alexis, the head of the Vitrians, told her the Healing Méndez was gold in color, but Eric had debunked all that by telling Wanda the rebels not only did not have the Healing Méndez, but it wasn’t gold in color.

Now Wanda found herself in the midst of the so-called rebels, and before her stood a man she had been told was long dead: her dad’s very good friend, Xavier.

Since introducing himself, Xavier had done nothing but wait patiently for her to respond. She didn’t know what to expect. She’d heard lots of nasty things about the rebels. She should expect brutality at their hands. Was Xavier imagining what type of inhumane punishment or torture was about to come upon her?

No sooner had she thought this than he spoke up.

You remind me of my old friend, Marcus. I can see him in your face. You bring back good memories of him.

She remembered everyone saying Xavier and her father were very good friends, and it made her all the more perplexed as to what was happening.

We have to move quickly, he said. I don’t want to rush you, but you can’t stay here too long.

Wanda studied him but didn’t respond. Xavier was dressed in a fitted black outfit adorned with silver curves and lines, just like the other rebels standing around and looking at Wanda. There were about a dozen of them, and they had arrived in the nick of time before Eric could hurt her.

Xavier didn’t have a helmet on, but most of them did, like motorcyclists. Xavier’s fitted black outfit revealed his huge stature, about the same height as Alexis, around six-foot-five inches. He was dark in complexion with brown eyes, hair cut short and trimmed around the edges of his face. He was handsome, with his beard cut from the edges of his lips down and circling around his lower jaw with some white patches. His chest was wide like a body builder’s. He was one massive man.

Wanda stared at Xavier from the half-squat position where Eric had dropped her when he saved her from falling off the cliff. Her right knee was on the ground, and so was her right hand as she looked up and studied the man. Several things had begun to run amok in her mind as she remained in that position, cogitating. Her life had suddenly turned into a puzzle, and she didn’t understand how to put it together.

The man stretched his hand out to help her up. Wanda managed to get up by herself, her eyes not leaving Xavier’s face. She didn’t know what to make of his outstretched hand. She knew the worst was to come now with her in the hands of the rebels. She was ready for whatever pain they intended to inflict on her. All she hoped for was that she would get the Healing Méndez.

Suddenly, Wanda remembered her dad as bitterness erupted in her heart and flowed like blood through her entire body. She shook her head and closed her eyes as so many things flashed back in her memory. She opened her eyes.

You killed my dad! She looked straight into Xavier’s eyes. She saw confusion there, so she made herself clear. The rebels. She ignored the eyes staring from beneath the black helmets.

I was with your dad when he died, Wanda. I held onto him as he took his last breath, Xavier said. He gave a sad smile. If there was one thing I could have stopped or changed in the past, it would be Marcus’ death—

So, you did do it! she said. Her words tangled in her throat. Bathe had told her they were friends. Bathe had also informed Wanda that he was supposed to have been at the battle that led to her dad’s death, but he didn’t go.

No, Wanda, Xavier said. I was there; I fought alongside him . . . against the demons.

But you . . . you rebels are the ones sending the monsters, Wanda said. Her jumbled mind didn’t know what was happening. Jason was dying. She needed to act fast to save him and their mum. In fact, she carried the huge burden of needing to save many injured Vitrians. Vitrians who were wounded while they tried to save Jason and suffering in the fortress. It was imperative she get the Healing Méndez.

Alexis, the head of the Vitrian Fortress, had warned her she needed to retrieve the Healing Méndez from the rebels and return with it within forty-eight hours. Alexis told her Jason would die without the Healing Méndez because the demon’s cut was too deep.

Xavier’s smile intensified. We’ve never dealt with demonology or sorcery, he said, and Wanda stared. Eric had said the same thing at the shack.

Then who controls and sends the monsters?

The answer became obvious. She went quiet as she put it together.

If the so called rebels are not the ones sending the demons, then who? Her thoughts went back and forth, but she couldn’t let the words out. The pain of being manipulated surfaced on her face as the reality of everything Eric tried to explain in the shack hit her. She was naive to so many things. She had been lied to.

Alexis controls the demons, Wanda said slowly, answering her own question. The words vibrated and shook her entire body. How was it possible? Eric had mentioned it, but she had not
