    Chapter 01

Alice Ellison shifted from side to side in the bed. Her swollen stomach made it difficult for her to sleep these days. She pondered where her husband William was at the moment. He called her hours ago. Another late night at the office.

Her 34 years of age couldn’t compete with the younger women who pranced around his office. One night, William hurled his phone onto their faux leather couch. A series of text messages from an unknown woman consumed his locked screen.

Alice lifted her body from the bed. She wanted to lie there for a few more minutes, but her bladder decided for her.

She stared at herself in the full-length mirror. She wanted to chop off most of her hair. Alice didn’t have the energy to take care of it anymore. With her daughter a couple of months away from entering the world, she wanted to make life as easy on herself as possible.

After returning from the bathroom, Alice headed to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of cold water hoping to stop the tiredness from running through her veins.

A knock at her door startled her. Alice stopped her movements. Who could be here at 4:00 a.m? She stood on her tippy toes looking through the peephole not wanted to pull back the curtain which covered the front door window. Why hadn’t William installed the security camera for the front door? She could see a man in a blue uniform with a silver badge pinned to his shirt.

Yes? Alice called out to the man.

I’m Officer Redford. Is Mrs. Ellison home?

    I’m her.

Can I come in? I would like to speak with you for a moment.

    Give me a minute.

    Sure, ma’am.

Alice left the officer at the door. As fast as her legs could carry her, she rushed to her bedroom. Putting on her gray robe and matching slippers, which were near her closet door.

Going back into the kitchen, she popped a peppermint in her mouth from a glass jar sitting on the kitchen
