All Signs Point to Hell Vol. 2 - Kylie Rae

    The Mutations

Jack pressed the binoculars to his face and scanned the landscape, but he saw nothing in any direction. The sand whipped up in the winds and then settled down again somewhere else. From the position of the sun, he knew it was nearing midday, and the hollowed-out tree he hid inside cast the only shadow; the leafless branches swayed, and the twigged ends looked like clawed hands scraping over the ground. But it was quiet, and they were alone.

I think they’ve gone, Jack said. He descended the ladder and joined Lucy in the burrow. In the dim light from their lantern, he barely made out her outline in the brown dress against the dirt walls.

How can you be sure? Lucy fiddled with the corner of her dress and stared over Jack’s shoulder at the small gap in the tree trunk. They could be hiding.

Lucy, dear... Jack struggled to put on a calming smile and clasped her shoulders. There isn’t anywhere for them to hide. If I can’t see them directly, I’d be able to see their shadows. This field is flat for two miles, and they’re not exactly good at hiding out in the open.

The chemically mutated animals were anything but small. In the desert region, the dominant animals were the birds and the lizards, and both species did their best to not be out in the open. They liked to surprise their prey once they’ve been lulled into a sense of safety.

Lucy chewed on her bottom lip and considered his words. Yes, but what if they-

Lucy. If we don’t move now, we’ll lose our chance. We need to get back into town to gather supplies. It’s our turn and they’re depending on us down there. Jack’s voice developed an edge, but he kept the smile on his face.

Okay. Okay. You’re right, of course. I just... I don’t like this.

Me neither. But we have to take our turn.

Lucy nodded, and Jack turned back to the ladder. He grabbed the gray, green, and brown tarps and Lucy slung the duffel bags over her shoulders. As they emerged from the burrow, Jack let the canvas fall over their heads and the dense summer heat closed in around them. One slow step at a time, they began their journey across the field towards the trees.

Fifteen minutes passed in silence. Lucy’s breath came in shallow gulps, and Jack worked to keep his irritation to himself. She would not help the situation by breathing like that. It was too hot under the camouflage for her to not remain calm. But reprimanding her wouldn’t do any good either. She’d cry and attract unwanted attention, and then the birds would catch them for sure. Any of the creatures low to the ground would be sure to hear her. He didn’t want to look into the eyes of the lizards in the area.

How he missed his old scavenging partner.

Rick wouldn’t have huffed and puffed under the tarp. He would have been in the lead and Jack wouldn’t have held as much responsibility. Those had been the good days; when he’d only had to worry about taking orders and doing the heavy lifting.

Five minutes later, a ruffle of feathers made them stop in their tracks.

    Jack? Lucy whimpered.

Hush. Don’t move. Jack reached back with one hand to hold her arm
