    introduction

    A REASON FOR HOPE

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

    (Romans 1:16 NIV)

In 57 AD, just three decades after Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Apostle Paul was preparing for a missionary journey to modern-day Spain. He hoped to stop over in Rome to raise financial assistance for his trip, but he had two significant challenges he would first have to overcome.
Because Paul did not plant the church in Rome, he did not know many people there. Unlike with the churches he planted in Ephesus, Corinth, and other cities, Paul would have to build trust and establish a relationship with the members of the Roman church.
At this time, the church in Rome was suffering from great internal division. Both the Gentiles and the Jews who had become Christian converts wanted to worship in separate communities. A divided church was not only problematic for Paul’s missionary purposes, but the internal strife would also make it more difficult to represent Jesus to the Roman Empire’s most cosmopolitan and influential city.
In many ways, the dynamics Paul faced in Rome are not unlike what we face today. As with Paul, the divisions we are currently experiencing seem insurmountable. We live in a divided society rife with conflict. There is extreme polarity in the political, cultural, and theological realms of our lives. The idea of reaching consensus, compromise, or just a basic level of tolerance for those with different beliefs seems all but impossible. Within our own society, there are deep divides in opinion about social equity, race relations, and even gender identity. We seem to have reached an impenetrable impasse.
At the time of the writing of this devotional, the world has suffered through nearly two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This global health crisis has essentially put a gigantic magnifying glass on the lack of trust and civility that exists in our present culture. Emotions are high. Tensions have flared. Politicians wax poetically about the good old days when a terrorist attack on the United States brought together our then-divided country. These are desperate times, indeed.
I believe that hope can be found in Paul’s writings to the church in Rome. Once our differences are put into their proper context and approached with a sense of love and humility, the matters that currently divide us are minuscule in comparison to the matters that can unite us. Paul reminds us of the promise made to us by God has the divine power to bring us all together.
As Christians, we have a responsibility to represent Jesus in our communities. What would Jesus do in light of the current conflict we are
