Stanley was finishing up getting ready when he heard a knock on the door. He felt his skip beat at the first bang, and when he tried to quiet his nerves a couple of seconds later, he realized how futile that would be. He hadn't slept the night before, and his palms wouldn't stop sweating. He was nervous, and everything around him seemed to only heighten that anxiety.
He opened the door and was greeted by General Hopkins and the lab tech, Alundra. They both stood in the white, bright hallway, looking at him. Stanley felt his body start to react, as he knew what their presence meant, but he also didn't want to show the pair that he was as scared as he was.
Almost ready to go, soldier?
Hopkins asked.
As ready as I'll ever be,
Stanley said.
Stan, don't sweat it so much,
Alundra said. His brown eyes met her gaze and he nodded, walking past them and down the hall towards the Portal Room.
Stanley wasn't sure why he was so worried. He knew that things would be okay, physically, but the one thing that kept on sticking to the back of his mind was the unknown he would be facing shortly. It wasn't long ago that his partner Kevin had gone down the same path and had never returned, so obviously, it wasn't like he was completely sure he would be free from danger.
Stanley and Kevin had been working on the theory of mirror universes for years, and it was only recently that they had made a discovery that changed their lives. It had taken eons for them to do it, but only weeks prior they had discovered a way to access these dimensions. It took a lot of technological power and know-how, but on Monday morning after years of no results, Stanley and Kevin both watched on as the portal opened up and shone a bright blue and gold light that illuminated the entire room.
Holy shit,
Kevin had said, we fucking did it! Stan the Man, we did it! It's finally open!
Stanley smiled and hugged his partner as hard as he could. They had been ridiculed, shamed, and cast aside for their devotion to finding an actual doorway to another world, and now that it was there in front of them, Stanley had a hard time wrapping his head around it.
I can't believe it, Kev. We actually did it! Holy shit!
Kevin turned and looked at the portal. It was violently whirling in an oval, casting a bright glow over the entire room. It was just the two of them in the lab, or what they had renamed The Portal Room. Alundra was on vacation that week, so she was not there to witness their triumph. That was what made it seem surreal to Stanley later on. Had he dreamt the entire thing? Was he going crazy? Those questions only persisted due to what happened next that fateful day.
Kevin turned to Stanley and then said the words that would change Stanley's life forever.
One of us needs to go inside of it,
Kevin said. We have to make sure that it's stable enough to support life traveling through it. I'm gonna step through it, Stan. I want to see what's on the other side.
Stanley protested the decision immediately. "You can't go in there. We don't know anything about it.
