Sealing The Deal - Anna Mann

    Chapter 1

    Clarke Johnson had worked hard.

Three long years. he sighed, his relief obvious. Three long years of late nights and lost weekends. Mia, his pretty young wife had suffered. So much time alone, the feelings of neglect, the frustration!

For three years she had lived a spiritual life. And I think I'd probably have had more sex if I had been a nun she had thought more than once. But she understood, and she supported her husband, because what he was doing would secure the future.

It had all started at a trade exhibition in Dubai. Clarke had been a part of a government sponsored trade mission, and for a week both he and Mia had sat in their tiny booth surrounded by the revolutionary electronics that Clarke had developed. Security systems, controllers for irrigation systems, robotics controllers. Hi tech industrial products with hi tech companies as customers.

It was a gamble, their business. After working for years for a major conglomerate Clarke had been disillusioned when every idea that he presented was passed over and dismissed, then revealed several months later, with a few modifications of course, and the credit given to his managers.

He had re-mortgaged the house, and then sunk their life savings into new developments and patents. He was proud of what he had developed, and the company had won a few small contracts, just enough to pay the bills and keep them afloat... but from that small booth in Dubai something massive had grown.

I would like to introduce to you, His Highness, the Crown Prince Abbas Al-Shamsi.

Mia had felt a little overwhelmed as the swarthy Arab had studied her from under heavy brows. His eyes were as piercing as any hawk, and so dark that she could barely see any pupil. His red and white patterned keffiyeh framed a gaunt face, his olive complexion saving him from looking sickly. His neatly shaped goatee beard displayed not a single grey hair, which means he must dye it she thought, the man was easily in his sixties, no one escaped the signs of ageing.

Don't get too impressed, Daniel, a representative from one of the neighbouring booths had laughed as the official entourage move on to other halls and more products, Every single one of these camel jockeys is the bloody crown prince of somewhere, that one isn't anything special.

I don't care what his title is, Clarke had replied, Just as long as he has the money to pay for the deal he was hinting at.

Now that's where there is little dispute, Daniel had laughed, Just make sure you read the small print in any contract, they can be devious bastards.

Over the next few months Clarke had visited Al-Shamsi's offices many times, and eventually a tentative deal had been struck. He would modify his irrigation controllers, and develop additional products to modernise thousands of farms across the Middle East. The contract was worth more millions than Clarke had ever imagined in even his wildest dreams... and so he had devoted three years of his life to making the deal a reality.

Now everything was ready, large scale tests had proven successful, his production facility was geared up and ready to start manufacture... everything was in place, all he needed was the official contract and cash would begin to flow.

Bring your beautiful wife on this visit. he had been told, Clarke had seen the invitation as a strengthening of relations. The Crown Prince was actually very approachable during the weekend visits to his home on the Red Sea, he even dared to believe that a friendship was developing.

We will make this deal official during the next week. Al-Shamsi had indicated, And while you are both here in my country, you will be guests in my home.

Two days later and Daniel's warning was ringing in Clarke's head, Read the small print.

The contract was signed, letters of credit were approved and pending... but there was one condition. A condition casually announced over dinner.

A condition that had left Clarke speechless.

A condition that had made Mia's blood run cold.

WE HAVE TO CALL THIS off. Clarke sat on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands. At first he had taken what Abbas had said as
