Introduction
My name is Lisa Hughes and I am the sister of the deceased Calvin L. Hughes who was found with a single gunshot wound to the center of his forehead on February 09, 2019.
Many events occurred that led up to my brother’s death, starting on that Friday the 8th.
And because of the given events, we know Calvin was murdered. My family and I seek justice and a place of fairness where we can be heard to give my brother a voice again.
Although there is conflicting evidence that suggests Calvin was murdered, the coroner and the police refuse to investigate.
It is my opinion that due to the police negligence of not following through with the 911 call that was made by myself that early noon of February 9, of persons coming to my home and physically attacking me and trying to gain entrance.
Upon leaving my home, they made terroristic threats against Calvin’ s life. Stating that they were going to find and kill him
. Within an hour, my brother was missing and subsequently found dead on the side of the road.
My family and I have a multitude of concerns in the handling of my brother’s death thus far. We have been met with avoidance, evasiveness, and untruths, as well as fraudulent statements that were made in Calvin’s coroner’s report stating: no blood on the exterior sides of the vehicle.
However, included in the report is the incident regarding a physical altercation with his girlfriend at their home in Lower Paxton Township Police, where an arrest warrant was issued for my brother that Friday evening of the 8th.
But there were no mention of the retaliatory threats that were made against his life and the assault against his family members within hours of finding him deceased.
Furthermore, because of the many mistakes made and misrepresentation of the evidence provided by the Dauphin County Comer, as well as, the Harrisburg Police Department, we strongly question the integrity and competence of any information forthcoming by either party.
My concerns are these persons that murdered my brother believe they’ve gotten away with murder. And these murderers walk and live among us in our communities with the bolstered feeling they got away with murder once. We can expect more homicides.
Therefore, my family and I humbly ask City Council Members to help launch and/or oversee an independent investigation into the reopening of my brother’s Calvin Hughes death on February 9,2019.
Confiscation of Calvin’s Wallet and Cell Phone
At some point and time on February 9 th the Harrisburg Police Department notified the Lower Paxton Police Department that Calvin had been found deceased 8:30 a.m. that morning. On or about 12:30 p.m., Lower Paxton Police went to Calvin’s home at 4297 Wimbledon Drive, Susquehanna Township, requesting that his fiancée, Grace Katayi, turn over his cell phone and wallet. Stating that, they were needed, and they may hold evidence.
Several family members and I went to retrieve Calvin’s property several days later from the Lower Paxton Police. At which, we were met by an officer in the corridor whom had informed us that Calvin’s property was being kept as it may hold evidential value and we could retrieve the items once the case was closed. We were elated that someone was going to look through the phone.
On February the 8th, the physical altercation between him and his fiancee. Calvin left the residence without his cell phone and wallet. Members of Grace’s family had taken Calvin’s cell phone and wallet in retaliation of the altercation earlier that evening.
Later that night at eleven p.m., one of Grace’s family member called my mother and told her, they were coming for her
. My mother told her don’t call me and being disrespectful like that, and hung up the phone. Dris had upset my seventy-five-year-old mother greatly and to ease her anxiety, I told her no one would come here. I could not have been more wrong.
Violent Confrontation
By twelve a.m. I heard my nephew screaming for me to come quickly. Once I reached the living room where my mother had sat watching TV , there was someone banging violently on the door. I looked out the window and saw that it was Grace’s two daughters, Hope and Faith, along with Damion whom was Faith’s boyfriend. I had known them for a little over three years or more.
Oncce I had opened the door, Grace’s daughters began to scream, "Where is Calvin and are you aware of the fight that happened between him and our mom?" I stated that, I was aware, and as you can see Calvin is not here.
It was at this point, Faith tried to pull me out of the door but I held on to the door frame. Although the while, I’m screaming for my mother to call the police and my mother just stood behind me screaming at them to leave our home.
Hope ran to my neighbor’s home and removed a snow shovel from the porch, and when she returned, she began swinging it towards me. As I attempted to shut the front door, that is when Damion started pushing me back and entering the doorway. He had gotten his right arm and right leg into the home and the females were pushing him further in. That is when my fiancee, James, heard the screaming and came to my aid.
