Hiram Ulysses Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. His mother Hannah Simpson and father Jesse Grant originally called him Hiram Ulysses. Grant’s father started out working as a hired hand at different farms. He was eventually fostered by Judge George Tod’s family after his father Noah abandoned him. The family and Jesse were mutually respectful, and Mrs. Tod pushed Jesse to pursue a career as a tanner. Jesse then left for Maysville, Kentucky, where his half-brother Peter ran a tannery. Subsequently, Jesse became a partner in a tannery in Ravenna as he entered his twenty-fifth year. His success as a tanner propelled him up society's ranks, allowing him to meet Hannah, the daughter of a local farmer, who later became his wife.
Jesse had saved enough money by the fall of 1823 to purchase his own tannery in Georgetown, Ohio. He constructed a two-story brick house across the street for his family. But young Grant did not enjoy work at the tannery and did not thrive as a student at school. To secure some sort of future for his son, Jesse sought to enroll Grant in the West Point Military Academy. When Grant arrived to register, he learned that Congressman Thomas Hamer, who had nominated him to West Point, entered his name as Ulysses
