    Prologue

This motherfucking bastard! Honor Sikes growled through clenched teeth and slammed her palm down on the cool counter. Reverberation from the heavy thud sent the little folded tablet she read from sliding flat to the surface.

Getting upset will do no one any good. Tyra Morse, the company’s accountant, her best friend and one of her three business partners, lifted her head from a computer screen and arched a slim manicured eyebrow in her direction. Behind the thick glasses she sported, her eyes appeared huge. Let’s just get through the anniversary celebration and–umm–yeah–we could talk to a lawyer, but really, what good would that do? The article is an opinion piece. It’s just a blog–one–for God’s sake. She shrugged and lowered her head to face her laptop. Let’s be honest. Was he entirely wrong?

We are not–not–reminiscent of a children’s fun factory and my cakes are not some sort of clay, crayon, creation! You are no fucking help. You’re supposed to be my best friend. Where is the support? Honor stalked from behind the counter and yanked off her apron, tossing it across the glass case. Was the critic wrong? Not in so many words, considering most of the harsh words were directed toward the décor instead of the food. Still. So yes… yes, he-it is very fucking wrong. The asshole food critic has tarnished my reputation as a baker. Hell, he has pretty much torpedoed the damn shop’s standing.

Really–you are getting way too emotional over one man’s opinion. Who actually reads that publication, or that site for that matter? Tyra grumbled offhand. And you changed everything, including the menu, over the last week. The stupid article is already irrelevant. Unless you’re just looking for a fight. She snickered. Why give an idiot that much power?

She wasn’t being irrational. Her day started at four am when she would arrive to make fresh-baked breads and pastries. Her shift lasted until two in the afternoon, sometimes later if they had orders to fill. Then her sister, Esteem, came in to handle the late afternoon and evening crowd and usually finished the day by creating homemade ice creams for the next morning. They put a lot of work into creating fantastic foods. Too much to be shit on by some asshole. Screw You Tyra… If you think I’m being over the top, just wait until Esteem see’s this bullshit. Honor shook her head. Her identical twin would lose her shit. Anything spoken about the shop–negatively–those were fighting words.
