A Day in Istanbul
This wasn’t just her baby.
Days ago, she’d gone to her first sonogram to discover the kid’s gender. A son. She’d been thinking of boy’s names since she found out. In the states, she and Ali would dream about a family tossing out unusual names when they came across them.
She was out of time. No matter what, she had to make Ali understand. The child she carried was the best of both of them. Thoughts chased themselves around in her head and the more she thought about how to tell him she was still pregnant, the worse the headache.
Wind drove the rain in sheets, creating a steady staccato against the bus window. Grace held tighter to the hanging handle as the bus braked hard. The constant swinging back and forth made her nauseous. Beyond the vehicle, horns blared and within the space, riders chattered. She rubbed her burgeoning belly. For months she worried she wasn’t showing and now she was terrified that she was. Almost overnight, her son, he made himself known. She couldn’t hide it anymore, but it was too late for an abortion. Ali would have to accept it. He was going to be a father.
With the new addition to their family, life would change for them. The constant partying had to stop, and they needed a bigger place, which would cost more money. It was one of the many things she was determined to talk about. Ali would have to find a job. Her meager wages wouldn’t feed a family of three, let alone keep a roof over their heads, too.
He wouldn’t work for over two months, always finding some reason the position didn’t suit him. She dropped her head back and exhaled. I will not think negative. With his degree in economics from a university in the US, he should have been able to get a good job. What did she expect? When she met him, he was living on - no blowing - through his scholarship money. She didn’t find out the funds came from a corporation that he was supposed to come back and work for until they’d been together for some time.
Ali made it seem as if he came from a well off family and they were supporting his endeavor to learn. After dating for a year, they moved into together, and his monies suddenly dried up. She was so deep in love it never dawned on her she’d been set up. Ali barely made it through university. It was her completing his papers and sitting in on some of his tests that got him his degree.
Grace went still. Realization dawned on her. She did most of his schoolwork. No wonder he couldn’t keep a job. He had a diploma but not the actual education. She was a whole other level beyond young and dumb back then. Nope, she was epically stupid… if she knew then what she knew now.
The company that issued his scholarship cut off funds a month before they started living together. He was
