For more than thirty years, China had been torn by war. Following the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1925, China had been ruled by warlords, each trying to gain power and control over the country. Following Japan’s invasion in 1937, China had been split into two.

The Chinese Civil War, which lasted until 1949, was between the Kuomintang, led by Chiang Kai-shek, and the Communist Party, led by Mao Zedong. The two sides fought each other constantly.
