CONTINUED ADVENTURES ON TRISTAN DA CUNHA letter of the month

What happened next on our ‘Southern Ocean Adventure’ (see SM, Oct 2023)? The Tristan people were very welcoming and hospitable, and we quickly settled happily into island life. It was a fine sunny morning when RSA dropped anchor off the Settlement of Tristan da Cunha. There was a modest Atlantic swell running, so our three young children were loaded into a cargo sling and lowered into the Government barge, as we clambered down a rope ladder.

A man was stood on the western breakwater watching to signal for a smooth time, then suddenly the engine roared, and a wave carried us into the harbour, where we were greeted by a sea of curious faces. Our adventure of four years on Tristan da Cunha had begun.
