About this ebook

Get the Summary of Alexander Galloway's Uncomputable in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Narrating some lesser known episodes from the deep history of digital machines, Alexander R. Galloway explains the technology that drives the world today, and the fascinating people who brought these machines to life. With an eye to both the computable and the uncomputable, Galloway shows how computation emerges or fails to emerge, how the digital thrives but also atrophies, how networks interconnect while also fray and fall apart. By re-building obsolete technology using today's software, the past comes to light in new ways, from intricate algebraic patterns woven on a hand loom, to striking artificial-life simulations, to war games and back boxes. A description of the past, this book is also an assessment of all that remains uncomputable as we continue to live in the aftermath of the long digital age.

    #1

In the 1860s, a photographer named François Willème came up with a way to make life-sized, perfectly sculpted sculptures out of sunlight. He called this process photosculpture.

    #2

The idea of creating a sculpture from a photograph was first put forth in the mid-sixteenth century by Benvenuto Cellini, and was later popularized by Rodin in the late nineteenth century.

    #3

The process of photosculpture relies on taking multiple photographs of a subject, at different angles, and then digitally assembling the photographs into a continuous form. The process was first used by photographer François Willème in 1861.

    #4

The second technique involves taking a picture from every angle around a subject. This produces a photograph with many different perspectives, or points of view.

    #5

The true mission of this humble art form will be to bring sculpture into private life and to perpetuate the photograph's image
