About this ebook
Get the Summary of Rob Dunn's A Natural History of the Future in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book.Original book introduction: Our species has amassed unprecedented knowledge of nature, which we have tried to use to seize control of life and bend the planet to our will. In A Natural History of the Future, biologist Rob Dunn argues that such efforts are futile. We may see ourselves as life’s overlords, but we are instead at its mercy. In the evolution of antibiotic resistance, the power of natural selection to create biodiversity, and even the surprising life of the London Underground, Dunn finds laws of life that no human activity can annul. When we create artificial islands of crops, dump toxic waste, or build communities, we provide new materials for old laws to shape. Life’s future flourishing is not in question. Ours is.

#2
The human population has been accelerating, and with it, our consumption of the planet’s resources. This has led to the creation of the Anthropocene, an era in which humans have become the dominant influence on the planet.

Linnæus was a Swedish naturalist, born in 1707. He traveled to Northern France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and his work was largely based on what he had seen in those places.
#4
The Western scientific tradition of naming all of life began with a Swedish bias. Even today, the further you go from Sweden, the less likely it is that a new species will be named after you.
#5
Entomologists, who study insects, were perplexed by the sheer number of beetle species in a single rain forest tree. They didn’t know anything about these species, other than the trees from which they had fallen.
