About this ebook

Get the Summary Robin George Andrews' Super Volcanoes of in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book.Original book introduction: Volcanoes are capable of acts of pyrotechnical prowess verging on magic: they spout black magma more fluid than water, create shimmering cities of glass at the bottom of the ocean and frozen lakes of lava on the moon, and can even tip entire planets over. Between lava that melts and re-forms the landscape, and noxious volcanic gases that poison the atmosphere, volcanoes have threatened life on Earth countless times in our planet’s history. Yet despite their reputation for destruction, volcanoes are inseparable from the creation of our planet.

A lively and utterly fascinating guide to these geologic wonders, Super Volcanoes revels in the incomparable power of volcanic eruptions past and present, Earthbound and otherwise―and recounts the daring and sometimes death-defying careers of the scientists who study them. Science journalist and volcanologist Robin George Andrews explores how these eruptions reveal secrets about the worlds to which they belong, describing the stunning ways in which volcanoes can sculpt the sea, land, and sky, and even influence the machinery that makes or breaks the existence of life

On May 8, 1902, a volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique began to violently erupt, killing nearly 30,000 people in just a few hours. It was this event that convinced 31-year-old Harvard University geologist Thomas Jaggar to dedicate his life to studying volcanoes.

    #2

Jaggar was a geologist who, in 1906, became the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Geology Department. In 1908, he was on an expedition to see Kilauea, the volcano on the island of Hawai’i. He was fascinated by the sight of a lake of lava.

    #3

The author, a volcanologist, was the director of the Geophysical Observatory in Hawai’i, which was set up in 1909 to study the physics and chemistry of Kīlauea volcano.

    #4

The year before the volcano erupted, scientists predicted that it could erupt anytime, but it took until January 3, 1983 for the volcano to finally blow.

    #5

The Halema’uma’u lava lake has been rising at an alarming rate, and could overflow its boundaries at any time. It is not far from the summit of Kilauea, but that is where the danger lies.

    #6

The next day, May 3, a new fissure opened up in Leilani Estates, near Pahoa. On May 4, the crack in Leilani Estates widened and lava began flowing out.
