    James Comey’s book A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership (2018) is both a memoir of the author’s tenure as FBI director and a warning to the American public about the dangers of an unethical president.

    Comey grew up in a middle-class family in northern New Jersey. As a child, he had numerous encounters with the seedier aspects of humanity, including playground bullies who tormented him at school. Worst of all, when he was a teenager, a burglar broke into the family home while Comey was inside. Comey believes the man was there to sexually assault his sister, who was not home at the time. Although Comey and his family managed to escape unharmed, the experience filled him with anxiety. Over time, that experience and a larger desire to protect innocent people from bullies and criminals drove Comey to a life in law enforcement.
