FOREWORD
Island of fairies is a nomenclature that suggests a whimsical, magical place that is amazing, beautiful but sometimes fraught with adversities and danger. The idea for this book came to me while contemplating my stepdaughter’s amazingly beautiful spirit and intellect. Her ability to bring light and joy to anyone around her is magical. She has risen above adversities with the power of her will. She is my wonderful daughter who no one could possibly replace.
Beautiful
In the land of Desiderio during the tenure of President Aldo, the month of Novembre, on the twenty first day of the month, a beautiful baby girl was born. She was delicate and fair with large blue eyes. Her parents were somewhat stunned by her beauty but also about her small, transparent wings attached to her back. The baby’s father, Leonardo, motioned the midwife out into the hallway and asked her if she had seen this type of deformity, the wings on his new daughter’s back, before. The midwife shook her head and replied she had not. She advised Leonardo to take the baby to Dr. Contias as soon as possible for an evaluation. She thought he might know the nature of the baby’s deformity and what measures were available to correct the problem.
The baby’s mother, Bianca, was exhausted- but not as much so as she expected- as she gazed at her tiny daughter, she fell in love with the small, beautiful child. She vowed silently to her baby she would protect her always from harm. Her mind was focused on her newborn child. She did not notice her husband and the midwife had left the room. Bianca contemplated the child’s wings. They folded flat when she cradled the baby. There was no indication that this position was uncomfortable for the newborn. Bianca held the baby up to the light to inspect her wings. They shimmered in the light and emanated colors of blue, violet and green. The base of each wing was tissue that appeared to be a type of cartridge. Each wing originated in an area on either side of the baby’s upper spine. The design of the wings was the same design as butterfly wings. If the baby was viewed from the front of her body, the wings did not show at all. Easily covered by the blanket or clothing, Bianca mused.
Her husband re-entered the room at that moment appearing worried but attempting to smile and be happy. She realized at that point raising this child would have its challenges for both of them. To love this small, beautiful girl and yet understand her upbringing would be a voyage into the unknown. She did not know her husband considered the child to have a deformity.
Is she not beautiful, Leonardo? How did we produce a child so fair and perfect?
Bianca marveled.
She is beautiful, my love,
replied Leonardo. I think, however, we should take the baby to Dr. Conti in a few weeks for a visit. How are you feeling? It was a difficult labor, and you look so tired.
I am fine, Leo. Really, I am. It is as if the birth was in the distant past. I feel almost recovered- which makes no sense...
Bianca, I love you very much. The baby would have been an adjustment had the child been as others, but this child will test us both. I think she could not have been born into a better situation. Our love for each other and now, this child, will pull us through anything to come. We will figure things out as we go.
What shall we call her, Leo? She is so special she must have a special name.
Let us call her Bella, Beautiful. She is a beautiful girl-belle ragazza.
That is perfect, Leo. I agree she is a belle ragazza,
said a smiling Bianca.
The Midwife
As Lucinda Marchetti left the residence of Bianca and Leonardo Mancini, she hurried along the cobblestone street under the light of the full moon. The baby was lovely, but so sad the deformity would hobble her socially.
Lucinda thought back through her thirty years as a midwife and could not remember any similar deformity on any child she had delivered. This child’s malady was strange-quite strange. She would discuss this with her mentor, Dr. Contias, tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow would be fine. It was an hour away from the dawn and she longed for her bed.
It was early in the morning when she arrived home. Her husband, Anito, was awake when she entered their home. She looked at him and smiled. They had been married for twenty-five years. Lucinda and Anito were still very much in love and looked forward to sitting over coffee and sharing their thoughts. This morning, Anito had already started the coffee. She was so tired
