    Introduction

Congratulations on taking the first step toward getting a grip on the important matters in your life and beginning to prepare for emergencies. As you know, a well-managed life has many components. We often take care of a few of them (although maybe not well) and ignore some we just don’t want to deal with. And then there are the things we don’t even know we should be doing. As you work through this guide, you will begin to create a customized plan for prioritizing the things that are important to you and your family. Before you know it, you will be able to make informed decisions about essential matters to ensure that your life is under control and your loved ones protected.

This book covers a lot of ground and the priorities assessment tool (in Chapter 1) will help you know where to focus your attention first. I encourage you to complete the assessment and follow the guidance for ranking your priorities. Taking the first step is important; it will put you on the path to an organized life and help you maintain momentum. Update the assessment tool as you progress and as things change in your life.

The information presented in this book follows the assessment tool. For each topic, you will find information about what it is and why it’s important. After reading those sections, you can make an informed decision as to whether you wish to address that topic. The getting started section within each topic provides an approach and gives you suggestions about available resources and other considerations. Get a Grip on the Details also provides tools and templates to assist you, including tracking tools that will help you keep your information up-to-date.

Good luck and may you enjoy the benefits of an organized life.

    Priorities Assessment

Get a Grip contains an extensive amount of material. Depending upon your personal situation, some matters will be more important to you than others. Because of the broad and inclusive content, it may take a bit of time to work through all the topics of this book. To begin, complete the priorities assessment (below) in order to outline a work plan that will allow you to focus on the matters that are most important to you.

As you work through the assessment, consider factors in your life that will help you prioritize which documents or plans you should attend to first. For example, do you have minor children? Do you own a home? If you have minor children, it is essential that you plan ahead to provide for them if something were to happen to you. Who would care for them if you were unable to work or in the event of your death? You must identify a guardian and provide the financial means to support them. If you own a home, your responsibilities include mortgage payments, property insurance, and maintenance.

    Where to begin

As you begin the priorities assessment, carefully review the entire tool and become familiar with the description of each topic. Note that some will be more important to you than others (importance rating column) and some will be affected by influencing factors (for example, whether you have children or own a home). Then follow the three steps outlined below.

    Step 1

For each topic, indicate your current situation in the compliance rating column using a numbering system that ranges from 0 to 4. (See the detailed rating definitions below.) How do you think you’re doing today? Is the topic something you have thought about and feel completely on top of? Or maybe it’s not applicable to your situation? Give yourself a 0. If it’s one of those things you haven’t given a lot of thought to, or you implemented it years ago and haven’t thought about it since, rank your compliance 1 to 4 according to where you fall.

Note: According to this system, high current compliance in a given topic earns a 0 rating. The less you have accomplished in any of the topic areas, the higher your compliance rating (1–4).
