    What follows are excerpts from my notes compiled at the McCovey Asylum.

    Henry was the physical embodiment of insanity. He was all neurosis, all psychosis, all pathologies and sociopathies combined. He was dangerous, cunning, highly intelligent, deeply disturbed by past life emotional distresses. He was deluded. He was the most terrifying man I had ever seen come into the hospital. He came with guards behind him. He came with an air of control and power that I had never experienced from any other patient I had worked with in my entire career. A career, I may note, that had spanned three decades of study and practice with the criminally insane and the abnormally psychotic. I was and still am, an expert. I have seen, heard, read and studied all forms, all manifestations, of insanity and yet, I was not prepared for Henry. I don’t think that, even if I had years of time, I could ever have been prepared for Henry.

    The admitting interview, the group, the normal sitting down with the new patient, asking questions, making assessments, the nodding of heads, the humming of understanding by the doctors, my colleagues, was different with Henry. Most new patients shriek and howl, fight against their restraints, make bargains, make threats. Some have sat in total silence, a long string of drool leaving their lips and ending on the floor at their feet or on their lap. They are either faking it or so heavily sedated due to the possibility of a violent outburst that the
