Are you all right? Annabelle Darlin asked Mandarine Junkson, one of her regular customers. Mandarine just came in for her usual order of custard-filled donuts. In all the years she frequented the café, Mandarine had always been bubbly. But not this morning. What could have possibly burst her bubble?

Mandarine looked frazzled as if she didn’t get a good night’s sleep.

Annabelle wanted to reach out to her.

Annabelle loved working for herself and escaping the uncertainty and toxic rat race of the corporate world, but she had to get used to working 70 hours a week for herself so she didn’t have to work 40 hours a week for someone else.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise when Annabelle was suddenly laid off from her job and moved back to the small town of Apple Cove, a town of rolling green hills, apple orchards and the freshest country air you’d ever breathe in, just outside the city of Toronto. Not only did her now ex-boyfriend leave her for their boss—talk about tension mixed with heartbreak, but she escaped the hamster-wheel rat race and used some of the severance pay to open up her own small business, Darlin Donuts café. She had the pleasure of serving the finest customers and being a part of the lives of many wonderful people. Sadly, it wasn’t all fun and food when bad things happened—like murder.

Still, she loved the sweet cinnamon scent of oven-baked or crispy fried
