An Invitation
I want to invite you into a spiritual adventure. In this book you have an opportunity to learn from women by praying prayers derived from their spiritual writings and by singing songs of faith composed by women. You will be amazed by the insights they offer about God, authentic living, and your place in the journey. I love to prepare devotional books. The preparation of such a book becomes my own practice of prayer. Each phase of the production reveals something new to me about God, myself, and the community joined together in prayer. Writing this book has been my own act of prayer. I also know that people need this kind of resource in order to grow in their faith and in their relationship with God. For many people—maybe even most—prayer is not an easy thing. John Wesley once advised an early Methodist who was struggling in her life of prayer to pray the prayers of others until the Spirit guided her into her own way—until she discovered her own voice. That was good advice. So preparing a resource to help engage you in meaningful ways with the living God by introducing you to phenomenal spiritual guides simply delights me.
But why have I—a man—collected these prayers and songs of women and provided them to you here? Would it not be better for me to leave this kind of work to women? I admit that these are good and legitimate questions deserving a straightforward answer. Essentially, through my own use of this rich collection of prayers and hymns, these women have taught me how to be a better person of prayer. I have placed myself at their feet. Without them, I truly do not know what my own life of prayer would be like. Certainly I would be the poorer for their absence. So I want to honor that influence and celebrate those discoveries about God, life, and love. I offer this book to you so that you too can celebrate the spirituality of these women. I would love for you to have the opportunity to immerse yourself in this world, because I believe these prayers and hymns offer a vision of enduring value to all God’s children today.
I have published a number of devotional resources, but this book aligns with two others in particular. In Praying in the Wesleyan Spirit, I translated
John Wesley’s so-called standard sermons
into the forms of prayer in order to make them more accessible to the contemporary reader. Using the same approach, I translated
a
