The dream is shattering white. Flowing like silk or ribbons or water or hope. It is inescapable but then again, why would I want to escape. I am the center of attention. I am the apple of the eye. Lord above, I’m a whole orchard. And music. Such music like I have never heard. Music that would make the angels stop, set down their instruments, scratch their clean chins and think, sweet Jesus, so that’s how it’s done. There’s food there. Fancy stuff like they eat at Cristoff’s, the place on Main Street that’s always filled with fine looking ladies and portly gentlemen that look like money. And Champagne. The real stuff, not the stuff uncle Marvin brews up in his garage that looks like after flush toilet water and tastes like aunt Merri’s stockings after a long week on her feet. Real live, honest to goodness, straight from... France or Spain or where ever the hell champagne comes from, champagne. It’s in those long, slim glasses being passed around on silver trays by sweet-faced boys in white tie. They nod but never speak. Try as you might to get them to giggle or smile or say howdy... or sneak out past the back porch, under the magnolias and maybe smoke one with you, maybe push you against one of those mighty tree trunks and kiss you... they just pass the champagne, nod and vanish into that crowd. That crowd... Lord, that crowd is like a field of daisies stretching from my toes to the horizon and I know it goes even further than that. When I stand up, when I walk toward them, when I decide to be among them, all the boys, I mean all the boys, even the boys who have grown old, got married, grown beards and handlebar mustaches but, at heart, are still boys, they all look at me and wonder, hope, dream that I will dance with them. That I will touch their face with a passing glance, touch their chest with a whispered finger as I moved among them. They all, as one, fall in love with me. The silent angels who have put their instruments back in their cases and are now hovering around the bar, drinking fine whiskey to ease their shame, look on and whisper to all the men. Don’t hold out hope, they say, she’s taken. Every single one of them looks around the room now, wondering who the lucky man is. Wondering who has me, holds me, who has taken me.

I love when you talk like that, Penny said and giggled.

Like what, Lila asked in earnest, I’m just talkin’ the way I think. Penny shook her head slowly, her eyes wide with wonder and admiration.

You just... think like that, she said, I mean, words like that, words like... like movin’ pictures just fill up inside your head like that?

I suppose they do, Lila said, now thinking about it, now wondering if the way she thought was abnormal, she suddenly got worried. Don’t you think this way, Penny? Penny looked down at her hands, small and rough from scrubbing the counter tops at Maynard’s Lunch Counter, she shook her head in slow sadness.

Nah, Lila, she said, her voice hushed and thick with shame, I just think... you know, regular thoughts. Thoughts like getting my stockings washed to have a pair for work and hoping I have enough money after the monthly bills to maybe go to the pictures twice or three times. I think about traveling when I see pictures in magazines, but you seem to be traveling in your head all the time. They were quiet for a moment.

Kinda strange, huh, Lila said and Penny jumped up, grabbed Lila’s arm and pulled her around to look in her eyes.

No, it is not, Penny said, serious, you never say that again. It ain’t strange at all. It’s music and... and storybook stuff, sure, but it’s so beautiful, Lila, just so beautiful. I love to hear you talk that way. Penny shocked herself at the passion of her outburst. She let her hand slip off of Lila’s arm and she started to retreat. Lila grabbed her hand and held her in place and then, pulled her close. Lila put her arm around Penny’s shoulder and they stood, hugging each other, being as close as best friends were meant to be. They stayed that way, holding on to each other, swaying slightly, looking down at the river as it moved with ease under the bridge.

You think about boys, don’t you, Lila said, Penny giggled and squirmed. Lila held on to her, started to tickle her and the two of them broke into a brief wrestling match, Lila taunting her friend to give up information about which boy she thought of. Penny, smaller and more susceptible to tickling than Lila, finally gave up a name.

Bobby Marris, Penny shouted through her laughter, I think about Bobby Marris all the time. She collapsed down to the wood slats of the Culvert Bridge and tried to regain her breath. She still laughed. Lila stood over her, silent, shocked and something else. Penny looked up and Lila quickly changed her expression. I know, Penny said, slumping her back against the railing, folding herself up, stupid, I know, he wouldn’t even give me a second thought. Lila sat down beside her and put her arm around her again. Penny leaned her head on Lila’s shoulder and sighed heavily. I’m so stupid.

No, you’re not, Lila assured her friend, I mean, I’m your best friend so that right there proves you’re smarter than ninety-nine percent of the people in this town. Penny laughed and hugged her best friend. Lila watched the water move slowly by under the bridge, wishing, for a moment, she could jump in and have all her sins, well, maybe one sin, washed away. And you’re my best friend, she whispered to Penny.

    ***

Bobby Marris laid in the grass, fully naked, looking up at the clear blue sky. His body still tingled, his mind, not very nimble to begin with, slowed even more, moving like mud. His thoughts were simplistic grunts now; I had sex again. I’m hungry. I like sex. I want to drink a lot tonight. Oh, man I like having sex. I am really hungry. Blissful simplicity being his theme as he looked up at Lila. She pulled her panties on, slipped back into her jeans. Bobby marveled at her breasts, still naked but about to be ensconced in the soft, pink bra he had just recently removed.

Sure do like your tits, he said to the Lila, silhouetted against the sun.

You’re a poet, Bobby, she replied. He noticed an edge to her voice. He wondered, briefly, if she had not enjoyed the sex. He dispelled that thought quickly, assured by her moans, the wetness between her legs and his well-known prowess, that there was no way she didn’t enjoy it.

Something wrong, babe, he asked as she pulled her shirt on and stood over him, one hand on her hip.

You gotta take me home, she said.

No rush, he said, reaching up for her hand, hoping to pull her down again into the soft grass, hoping to get her naked again. She was having none of it. She pulled her hand away violently.

There is a rush, Bobby, she snapped, I gotta get ready for work, which means I gotta clean you off me, get dressed and get to the diner so... there is a rush. Something was definitely wrong, he thought as he rose slowly and started to dress. Once he had his underwear and pants on, he threw his shoes and shirt into his truck and started to get in.

Well, he said to Lila. She stood, looking off into the distance, her arms crossed, her stance almost military, You comin’? She snapped out of her reverie and climbed into the truck. He steered the truck slowly out of the field that sat patiently, quietly, by the lake and started down the dirt road toward Lila’s house.

Did I do something wrong, he asked after the silence was too much for him to handle. She looked at him but said nothing. Did... did you not like that? he asked, now worried that he had crossed some line, that she would never allow him access to her body again. I told you I didn’t have a condom, you said that was OK, he continued to chatter nervously, she just looked harder out the window, scanning the passing terrain like she was looking for a lost dog or child or her self-respect. You told me I could come on you... you said that was OK.

It was fine, Bobby, Lila suddenly barked. He went silent, concentrating on his driving.

Good, he said after too much silence, cause I really liked doing it. I like the way...

Who’s your best friend, Lila asked, changing the tone of the conversation drastically. It took him off guard. He had to take a moment, adjust from thinking about how great it was to come on her body and who his best friend was. He certainly didn’t want those two thoughts occupying the same space.

Um..., he said, trying to get the two ideas separate in his slow moving brain, I’d have to say, Weston. He looked at her. Her body posture had not changed, she still leaned her head against the window, still scanned the passing landscape like a hunter.

Weston Parks, she said and he nodded. Again, silence, something he didn’t like, didn’t understand.

Why’d you ask that, he said, breaking the silence, hoping to generate enough conversation to cover the rest of the ride back to her house.

What would you do for him, she asked and then she looked at him, would you do anything for him?

I don’t... he started to say, trying hard to figure out where she was going with this conversation, I mean... you know... I’d do anything for him but... He shrugged.

But, what, she pressed him. He gave her a very sheepish look, But, what, Bobby?

I’m not... I don’t want to do a three-way with him or nothin’ like that, he said. She let out an exasperated sigh.

You’re an idiot, she said and went back to the window, to her watch. He drove in silence for as long as he could, which was not very long.

Why did you ask that, Lil? She turned slowly away from the window. She thought for a moment.

Penny Jones likes you, she said. He looked at her, then back to the road then back to her again. Did you hear me, she asked, anger in her voice.

OK, he said, she’s... I don’t even know her.

She’s my best friend, Bobby, she said, of course you know her. She’s my best friend, she is an amazing girl and... She likes you. He smiled at her and she knew immediately he didn’t get it.

Oh, babe, he said, taking her hand, you don’t have to worry, I’d never do anything with her. She pulled her hand away and began slapping at his arms and chest, he struggled to keep the truck on the road. She crossed her arms and refused to talk for the rest of the ride. This forced Bobby to fill the silence, which was never a good idea. He babbled on about his loyalty to her, about his pleasure in having sex with her. She said nothing. They pulled up in front of Lila’s house and she got out, slammed the door and walked to the driver’s side. She reached in and grabbed Bobby’s lower lip and pulled his face toward her.

Listen to me, she said directly to his face, she is a sweet girl and my best friend, she is crazy about you and we are going to find a way to let her down easily and carefully, you understand? He nodded, unable to speak with an imprisoned lower lip. Good, she said and let his lip go, I’ll call you after my shift and we will work this out. She walked away and left Bobby confused with an aching lip. He watched her vanish into her house. He looked at his lip in the rear view mirror, it had begun to swell.

She has sex with you, he told his reflection, totally worth it. He put the truck in gear and drove off.

They cleaned the counters, put away perishables and then sat the counter drinking cokes, the night outside the door lit only by the neon sign in the window. They were both very quiet that night, during and now, after work. Penny was feeling foolish about her earlier admission, Lila was feeling sick about her unknowing betrayal of her best friend.

Do you think I’m stupid, Penny asked her friend with great sincerity, tell me the truth. Lila thought for a moment, she could come clean and risk breaking the girl’s heart and ruining a friendship she truly valued.

No, Lila said after some thought, I don’t think you’re stupid. I am surprised though. Penny nodded, she understood. Bobby, she knew, was way out of her league. She expressed this to Lila, who laughed and immediately set about dissuading her of that thought.

Not at all, Lila said, he would be so lucky to have a girl like you. Penny smiled, sipped her coke and then spoke.

What do you mean by that...? she asked, a girl like me. Lila was surprised, she hadn’t expected the question at all.

Well, she stammered, trying desperately to figure out what she did mean, you’re a good girl, she said at last. I don’t mean that in the no sex sense, I mean that in the best way. You’re really smart, you’re really funny, you’re kind, you’re so grounded. Bobby, I don’t know, he seems a little dim and unfocused, I bet you’d really focus him, make him better. That’s what I mean by he would be lucky to have a girl like you. Penny beamed. What the hell am I doing, Lila thought to herself, she should have been discouraging Penny to think about Bobby, but instead she was pushing her toward him. Penny thanked her, told her she was lucky to have a friend like her.

    It’s true though, Penny said.

I know it is, Lila replied, still bolstering her friend but now desperately looking for a way out.

No, not... Penny giggled and blushed, I mean the no sex thing. I haven’t... ever. Lila was surprised. She knew Penny didn’t have much luck with boys, although she had no idea why, she was smart, funny, everything she had told Penny she was. On top of that, Lila had seen Penny naked and she had a killer body. She was just shy, uneasy in her own skin.

I thought, Lila said and Penny shook her head no. They were quiet for a long moment. Well, then, you’d best stay away from Bobby, he’s all about sex. He’s all about conquest sex. You don’t want to get used and thrown away by a guy like that. Penny agreed that would be horrible.

Still, Penny whispered, he’s so dang hot. I bet he would be just... oh just so good in bed.

Yes, Lila said. Even though Bobby was not a mental giant, he certainly knew what he was doing in bed, or in a back seat or a field. He is.

    What?

I said, I bet he is, Lila caught herself and the girls closed up the lunch counter which served dinner as well. They walked home chatting about work, boys and whatever else, enjoying the rare cool of a summer’s evening. At her street, Penny hugged Lila, thanked her for the advice and promised she wouldn’t get involved with the likes of Bobby Marris.

He probably wouldn’t have anything to do with me anyway, Penny sighed as she walked to her house. Lila saw the solution and called Bobby when she got home.

    ***

Ask her out? Bobby said, confused, as usual. I don’t understand, I thought you were all worried and upset because she liked me? Lila sighed and explained the idea one more time. He was to ask Penny out, go on a date with her, come on strong, try to get her to have sex and then, she’d hate
