Back in Balsam Dell to heal after the death of her husband, Carly Hale is finally pursuing her lifelong dream—opening Carly's Grilled Cheese Eatery. After only five months, business is booming as Vermont vacationers and townspeople alike flock to lunch on her Party Havartis and other grilled cheese concoctions. All but Lyle Bagley, Carly's one-time high school boyfriend and now town bully who just bought the building that houses her eatery and wants Carly out. After a muenster of a fight, Carly's forced to put her nose to the rind and find a solution to keep her business afloat.
That is…until Lyle is discovered dead behind the dumpster of Carly's shop, and one of her employees becomes the prime suspect. In order to save her eatery and prove her friend's innocence, Carly must sleuth out the killer before she's the one who gets grilled.
With a delightful cast of characters, an inventive amateur sleuth, and a whole host of cheesy hijinks, Up to No Gouda is the perfect cozy murder mystery to melt into.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A delectable culinary cozy, complete with recipes for the mouthwatering dishes served at Carly’s Grilled Cheese Eatery in Balsam Dell, Vermont. Oh, how I wish this town existed as I’d eat at Carly’s establishment frequently and shop for uniquely designed and handmade cards at What a Card, owned by Gina Tomasso.Carly Hale couldn’t help but become a sleuth after a startling discovery in the alley behind her restaurant, with one of her employees as the main suspect. It is a cheerful and charming story, with an adorable Morkie named Havarti, a quaint small town, and sparkles of budding romance. My favorite descriptive lines were:“The kindness that seemed to radiate from him like bottled sunshine?”“With the chief eyeing her every move, she felt like a bug under a microscope.”“…her mind revolving like a frazzled planet around a rapidly scorching sun.” If a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup are your comfort meal of choice, you’re in for a scrumptious time. If you’ve never thought of grilled cheese and tomato soup as your “go-to” treat, Carly and her assistant Grant have savory suggestions to change your mind. Did I mention I wish this restaurant existed? Without a doubt, I’d be a regular customer. As an alternative, I’ll not miss a book in this series.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Meh. (Audiobook) it could have been the narrators voice, it was so "cheesy" always too bright, like a 50's sitcom woman. She was also stupidly nosey, so irritating. it started out so well, she was strong, self employed, loved cheese and animals I was all ready to love this book till I didn't. I finished it with a phew, glad that's over feeling. I will not be moving on with this author.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Having lost her husband in a tragic accident, Carly is forging ahead, opening a grilled cheese eatery and getting on with her life. It isn’t easy, but keeping busy helps. She has a great staff, and things seem to going well, until she gets a non-renewal notice for the shop. And then she finds a dead body behind her eatery. Could things possibly get worse? Of course, they could! When one of her employees becomes a person of interest in the crime, Carly goes into action. She enlists some help, does some snooping, and gathers her suspects. But it’s not smooth sailing. She is really a lot better at making grilled sandwiches than she is at playing detective. It’s a well thought out mystery, with really interesting characters. There are some twists along the way and a couple of red herrings. If you read carefully, you might figure out who the murderer is before Carly does, but likely, you’ll race through the book because it’s such a fun read. Can’t wait for book two!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Up to No Gouda by Linda Reilly has Carly Hale enjoying the success of her new business venture. After the death of her husband, Carly returned to her hometown to open Carly’s Grilled Cheese Eatery. Carly is surprised when the bank tells her the building has been purchased in the foreclosure auction by a man who does not wish Carly to remain. Lyle Bagley is the town bully, and he is giving Carly one month to get out before renovations begin. Lyle’s girlfriend wants to open a high-end fashion boutique in Carly’s spot. Suzanne, Carly’s parttime employee, does not take the news well and gives Lyle her two cents. When Lyle is found dead behind Carly’s shop, Suzanne finds herself the prime suspect. Carly knows that Suzanne would not kill someone and put her son in jeopardy. She sets out to prove Suzanne’s innocence and serve up the killer up to the police. Up to No Gouda by Linda Reilly is the debut of A Grilled Cheese Mystery series. I thought Up to No Gouda contained good writing, steady pacing, and relatable characters. I enjoyed getting to know Carly and the rest of the cast. I thought a grilled cheese diner was a clever idea for a cozy mystery series. I looked online and discovered it is a new trend in restaurants. Balsam Dell, Vermont is a charming town. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the scenery, shops, and homes. The mystery was nicely plotted out. There are a variety of suspects since Lyle was not well liked (putting it mildly). It depends on your sleuthing level on when (or if) you solve the whodunit. I thought the reason for the crime was clever. Carly conducted a good investigation. The case was nicely wrapped up at the end and I enjoyed the drama. I loved the little puppy in the story that gets named Havarti. He is a cutie pie. I do want to warn readers that reading this story will have you craving grilled cheese and tomato soup. There are certainly some unique grilled cheese combinations served at Carly’s eatery. I never thought of making grilled cheese dippers for tomato soup (I will be serving them to my mother soon). Up to No Gouda is a quick paced story that was over too soon. This is my favorite book by Linda Reilly. Up to No Gouda is a tasty tale with grilled cheese cuisine, a dead dirtbag, a framed friend, a precious puppy, an interfering editor, a sexy sports coach, and a curious Carly.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This cute, cozy mystery starts off a new series set in a quaint Vermont village and features Carly, newly-returned to her childhood hometown to run the grilled cheese shop of her dreams. Things look dire as the jerk from high school is ready to evict her restaurant, and get even more dire when he turns up dead in the parking lot. Carly goes into Miss Marple mode, as one does, to investigate the crime. The book features the usual cast of quirky small town characters. The bad guys are pretty one-note, but the other suspects have nice nuance. Carly herself is a pleasant character, a kind and forgiving person still getting over the death of her husband; of course, there is a promise of a potential romance going into future books. This is everything you’d hope for in a cozy, plus lots of grilled cheese talk. The back of the book even has recipes for the sandwiches mentioned in the book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5law-enforcement, amateur-sleuth, widow, small-business, small-town, family-dynamics, friendship, murder, murder-investigation, theft, Vermont, recipes*****You mean they eat gilled cheese somewhere besides Wisconsin? Teeheehee, guess where I live? The sandwich recipes are as good as the whodunit cozy! The story moves along well and has just enough twists and red herrings to keep this reader guessing. Can't say enough about the realism of the characters who could be anyone's neighbors. The publisher's blurb is a good hook, so no recap and spoilers are just wrong. I loved it and hope for another next year!I requested and received a free temporary ebook from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley.
