Pure Dynasty II - Leila Almarzoh

September 2021, the first day of school. Isabel and Molly were eleven months apart. Growing up, their neighbors called them the Irish twins. Isabel was supposed to start Kindergarten before Molly when they were younger, but Isabel turned five after the school’s cut-off date. Today was the day Isabel and Molly started their senior year of high school.
Isabel was in her room getting ready. She was making sure her hair was in a perfect ponytail. She took her bottle of mousse and tried to hold the bumps and loose hairs on the top of her head still. She then added some water with the spray she kept on her desk. She brushed her hair back and tied it up. She went over to her long mirror and looked at her outfit carefully. She stood there for what seemed like minutes, just looking at herself.
She then took a deep breath and nodded, took off her perfect ponytail, and sprayed more water. She tilted her body forward and put her head down as she scrunched her hair with her hands, lifted herself, and changed her outfit.
Isabel! Let’s go! You’ll be late if you take any longer to get ready!
Ladle yelled up the stairs.
She’s probably debating on what outfit to wear and what earrings it’ll go with,
Austin said, eating cereal at the table with Graham. Graham started laughing.
Oh man, if those earrings don’t match those pants, she ain’t getting no attention!
Graham said as he and Austin started laughing.
Oh, stop, you two,
Ladle said, making herself more coffee.
Just as Ladle was going to call for Molly, they heard her alarm go off.
She’s just getting up now? She’ll be late,
Graham said.
I wouldn’t say that exactly,
Austin answered.
Molly woke up, hit the alarm clock, and it fell on the floor. She sat up and took a deep breath. Molly told herself, one more year. She picked the alarm clock up and put it back on her table. Molly then picked up a pair of pants that were on the floor. She smelled it and shrugged her shoulders. Then put the pants on and went into the bathroom. She opened the Listerine bottle and gargled it as she walked down the stairs. Ladle looked at Molly and asked if she was wearing clean clothes.
Molly spit the Listerine in the sink and smelled her shirt. Why would you ask? Of course, they’re clean.
Austin and Graham started laughing. When Isabel came down the stairs, everyone looked at her. Isabel looked at everyone else.
Do I have something on my face?
Isabel asked, turning around to look in the mirror upstairs.
No, no, it’s just. You look amazing. You look confident and fearless, ready for anything,
Ladle said with a smile on her face.
Molly then hit Austin on the shoulder playfully and asked if he was ready for tenth grade. Austin and Graham looked at each other. Austin told her he was. He then smiled and said he was prepared to find himself a human girl with no planets or universes between them. Everyone smiled, even Ladle, as she rolled her eyes.
It’s about learning, not girls,
Ladle said.
I know. I’m just saying, I’m not making that mistake again,
Austin said.
Isabel was eating quickly, and just as everyone put on their jackets and shoes, Isabel stood there, thinking. Ladle asked if Isabel was okay. She nodded and told them she was just going to miss Anthony and Rene. Molly and Austin looked at each other, then put their heads down as they missed them too, already.
Ladle looked at her kids and shook her head in understanding. She told them it was just for the school year. They would see each other in June. Isabel nodded in agreement. Austin told them Anthony and Rene were probably having the best time in a school of magic.
Graham smiled and told the family they were probably learning to fight dragons and fly on magic creatures. Everyone joined in on things they believed Anthony and Rene could be doing in a school of witches.
Molly then told them unless there was a war in the universe or to the planet because then, the students in that school have to fight. Everyone stayed quiet. Isabel rolled her eyes. Austin told Molly she killed the vibe. Isabel zipped up her jacket and told them they would reach out and need the Crescent power if that were the case. She then looked at Molly and Austin and advised them always to be ready if they had to go and fight again. She started walking out the door as she stopped at Graham.
And if you're going to be staying with us for now, you too should be ready because this family has each other’s back, and that is something we will expect you to have our backs,
Isabel said, looking directly into his eyes. Graham nodded his head okay. Isabel walked out of the door.
Everyone looked at each other.
Great, another Rene has formed,
Molly said.
What do you mean?
Ladle asked. She’s right, ya know.
I didn’t say she wasn’t right. She’s completely right,
Molly said as she walked over to Graham. Notice how she said to have our backs, not stab our backs, don’t forget.
She stared at Graham, and then she smiled. And you’ll be fine.
She blew him a kiss and walked out the door.
Graham stood still in silence. Austin laughed and told him not to get on both his sister's wrong side, and he would be fine. Ladle laughed and shook her head. She told Austin to stop scaring his friend. She then kissed Austin on the head and told them to have fun in school and not use their powers on humans.
Austin looked over at Graham and asked if he was okay. Graham smiled and told Austin he was unsure if that was hot what his sisters did or if they scared him. Austin smiled and told him good luck with that and walked to school.
The bell rang, and kids from all over the building were running to their classrooms. Isabel sat down as she still felt the other children looking at her. She then felt a piece of paper hit her back. She looked down at the floor where it fell and picked it up. It was a note. Isabel opened the paper up and read, Maybe the world doesn’t think you are a witch anymore, but you can’t fool us. Isabel remembered she helped make peace with humans and witches, but her classmates still found a way to make fun of her for being different.
She then heard them, whispering witch
behind her. She went to turn around and saw it was Stacy and her friends from dance class and right next to them she saw Jess. Isabel looked at Jess. She looked back at Isabel and then looked down to the floor.
Don’t look at her; she’s with us now,
Stacy said.
Jess, can we talk?
Isabel asked.
The girls started laughing as Stacy looked at Jess. Yeah, Jess, can y’all talk?
Stacy said.
Jess looked up at Isabel just as the bell rang. Jess quickly told her no and ran out of the classroom. Stacy looked at Isabel and smiled. She then walked out In the back of Jess as the others all followed. Isabel stood there thinking how high school might be more complicated than saving the universe.
Leaving homeroom, Isabel walked to her first-period class. A girl walked beside her. She told Isabel not to listen to them. Last year, when she met them all at Jess’s big birthday party, she invited Stacy and her friends. The girl's stepbrother told her Jess had been their lapdog ever since.
Isabel remembered that birthday all too well. It was the moment Isabel knew Jess wasn’t a true friend. Not only did she feel Jess was scared of her, but the judgment was coming off strong. Isabel knew she had to stay away. Isabel thanked the girl and asked for her name. The girl looked down and then just walked away.
Molly was walking to first period when Danny and her friends came up beside her. Danny held his hands, covering Molly’s eyes asking to guess who it is. Molly smiled and told them it was the girliest girl in this damn school. Danny put his hands down and yelled. She was damn right. He then asked if she wanted to smoke by the stairs. Molly thought about it but told him after school. She looked at the rest of her friends and told them she would catch up with them later she was going to class.
Just as Molly was going to walk away, Danny held his hand out as a girl came walking closer to him.
Molly, this is my step-sister I was telling you about,
Danny said.
You told me about her?
Molly asked.
I knew you weren’t listening, remember my father cheated on my mother, and now he’s married to the mistress, well, this is her daughter,
Danny said.
Oh, I—
Molly said as she was thinking of why that didn’t sound familiar at all. Danny interrupted her.
I, nothing, you weren't listening. It was at my house last summer,
Danny explained. It’s okay, just be nice to her. It’s not her fault her mom is a whore,
Danny said as the girl punched his arm.
Oh, shut up, and what does that make your father?
the girl asked.
Danny smiled and shook his head in agreement. Molly looked at them and started to remember. Last summer, when she was hanging out in his room, he was smoking a blunt. She remembered she didn’t know why or who she really was when his room was spinning. She did remember hearing bits and pieces of the story.
Angela? Right?
Molly asked.
You were paying attention!
Danny exclaimed.
Angela smiled and nodded. A student came up to them and told them to get to class; the bell had rung. Danny looked at the ninth grader and asked if he wanted a blunt. Angela pushed Danny to get to class. Molly laughed and shook her head. She told the ninth grader to keep up the excellent work.
She patted him on the shoulder and walked with Danny and Angela down the hall. Danny then asked Molly if she was sure she didn’t want to go. She told him, no, and Danny then turned around to see if the ninth grader was still there. When he saw the kid had left, Danny ran out the door to meet up with their other friends to smoke.
Molly looked at Angela and asked if she was going with them. She told Molly she didn’t smoke as she walked into her classroom. Molly then walked a couple of feet down into her class.
After school, Isabel walked out of the school and glanced over to her left. She saw Austin and Graham with a bunch of kids she didn’t know. She stepped closer to them and felt nauseous. Austin looked over and started running towards her. He held her arm and asked if she was okay. Isabel looked over at the kids as they all stared at her. She whispered to Austin; she felt sick because of them. Austin rolled his eyes and took his hands off her arm. He told her they were just friends and they were harmless. Isabel felt negative energy coming off them all.
Isabel told Austin to walk with her home. Austin didn’t want to, he wanted to hang out with the boys, but he saw how the other girls were looking at Isabel. He then asked Isabel why they were looking at her like that.
I don’t know; it started in homeroom. The girls still think I’m a witch, and Jess won’t talk to me. It’s mostly because Stacy is their lord,
Isabel said, laughing. Austin started laughing with her.
Molly ran towards them and told them they should check on their mom. Isabel agreed as Graham walked over. Austin told them okay and waved the boys down. Graham yelled out to them; they will hang tomorrow. The siblings and Graham started walking away from school. Isabel told them she didn’t think they should hang out with those kids. Austin smiled and said it was fine, and he read their minds right away. They just believe they’re badasses, but they never did anything actually bad, except steal their parent’s beer once and a while. He told them they were harmless.
When they returned to the house, Ladle was sitting on the computer searching for a job. Everyone ran to their rooms except for Isabel. She felt her mother’s emotions, and they weren’t pleasant feelings. Isabel walked over and asked her mother what was wrong. Ladle was sitting on the office chair and asked Isabel to come to sit next to her. Isabel walked over and sat on the edge of the sofa near the computer desk. The desk had tons of papers spread out as if she has been searching for something. At the end of the desk she had a glass angel holding a few of her pens. Ladle told her she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do for work. Having her hair in a messy bun and wearing a sweatshirt she hasn't worn since her drinking days, it seemed as if she had been thinking for some time.
Ladle explained to Isabel that being a senior in high school meant that it was time to think about what she wanted to do in this life. The longer she waited, the harder it would be. It was time for Isabel to find her strengths and her skills, and what made her happy. Ladle told Isabel she could be whatever she wanted. Isabel didn’t have to leave planet Earth and become a warrior of the universe. She could stay and be an average human with any career she wants. Isabel sat and stared at the ground. She then looked up at Ladle and asked what she wanted to do when she was Isabel's age.
Ladle smiled and told her she wanted to own her mother’s bookstore. It was a sanctuary for the townspeople, a place of safety and peace. The people of Altair would come in and feel welcomed. Books, candles, potions, plants, and meditation.
What happened to grandma's bookstore?
Isabel asked.
I saw that place when I traveled,
Molly said, walking towards them. It was beautiful.
Yes, yes it was. When my parents passed away from the Evil, the building sat there and eventually was taken over by the council,
Ladle explained.
