    ON THE WINGS OF GODS AND ANGELS

    Dirk awoke in darkness, feeling solar wind on his face. There was nothing around him but open space. No planet. No sky.

    Nothing.

    He stretched out clear to the tips of his flukes and let the play of the sunlight warm him as he turned, the pressure of the wind itself driving him like a sail.

    Without a mirror, he knew himself to be transformed into a mighty being of light and energy. A whale in space, flying forever between stars and worlds.

    The night sky was so quiet that he could hear the rush of the solar wind. Gas giants moaned and belched in the distance. Ice giants shivered in the darkness.

    He became aware of a second presence nearby. Another whale, basking in the same power and joy as he was currently.

    This is the Forbidden Triangle? Dirk probed.

    It is, the other replied. We created a refuge where the younger civilizations could not bother us.

    Dirk shivered at the implications of younger.

    They were not speaking words right now so much as beaming thoughts into each other’s minds. Complicated hieroglyphic symbols.

    The being beside him was old on galactic scales.

    You were the first? Dirk asked now, turning his attention to the being.

    On Earth, cetaceans had evolved from land creatures, fusing legs into a great tail and other limbs into flukes and flippers to swim as top predators or mighty grazers. Dirk was feeding on sunlight, though he knew he had teeth capable of rending, should the need arise. A solar sperm whale, perhaps, with baleen when he needed it and teeth when forced.
