Dirk woke first, refreshed as if that dream with Steffy had been all in her mind and the godlike beings they had been chasing wanted them all sharp for whatever adventures were set to begin. The fire was starting to fade some, from the log he’d put on it in the middle of the night. When Steffy’s needs had caused the two of them to fall into a dream.

Or perhaps it was all a dream? Dirk couldn’t be sure. The goddess Imelda had called it a complicated machine designed to test people. A Rube Goldberg device, so that none of those beings would be tempted to put a thumb on the scales as a seeker tried to penetrate the Forbidden Triangle.

At the same time, that meant that things might cause him and the women harm.

If they weren’t true gods, and he suspected that they weren’t, then they could fuck up just as easily as anybody else.

It had been Princess Rayne’s mission, so to speak, but she had him along now, and he would see to it that she survived. And Tiffany and Steffy as well.

Dirk Thruster would get them all home safe. Or he’d have words with those gods.

He drew a breath and sat up. As he rose, the others awakened as well. He glanced over at Steffy and winked at her, watching the woman remember her dream and blush furiously.

Tiffany was up and helping Rayne to her feet as Dirk found one last log to place on the fire. Looking around, there were tins and bags of food on a shelf that he couldn’t remember from last night. At the same time, Dirk understood that none of this was really what it seemed.

Still, food and coffee would be good, so he pulled things down and put them on the table.

Breakfast, he said with a cheery voice as he found a good rock almost in the fireplace for the pot to rest on
