CHAPTER 1
Yaaaaawwwwwnnnn!
11-year-old Kiani screamed out while stretching on the hot summer morning in the middle of July. She was the oldest of three siblings. As she opened her eyes and looked up at the bottom of the top bunk, she took a deep breath and reached for her glasses so she could see a little more clearly. I wish mom and dad were here,
she mumbled.
Kellen, a six-year-old drama queen, popped her head out from the top bunk, HEY, I’m hungry and hooooot!
I’m hungry and hot, too. But it’s too early to bother me right now. Where’s your brother?
Kiani grumbled.
He’s in his room,
Kellen said while hopping off the top bunk with one leap and heading down the hall.
As Kellen ran down the hall to go see her brother, Ms. Harrison popped out of the bathroom and said, Hey, hey, hey! Good Morning, Ms. Thang. Remember, no running. Where are you off to so fast?
Out of breath, Kellen replied, To wake up Kareem.
Laughing, Ms. Harrison said, OK, but slow down. Breakfast will be ready soon.
Kellen went into Kareem’s room. She jumped onto the bottom bunk of his bunk bed thinking she was jumping onto him. He was not there. She looked around puzzled, thinking to herself, Huh, where is he?
As she jumped off the bed, something caught her leg from under the bed. She crashed to the floor. Kareem, the 8-year-old middle sibling and only boy, came from under the bed hysterically laughing with tears falling from his eyes.
Kareem why’d you do that! I hurt my stomach!
Kellen exclaimed.
He continued to laugh, jumping on the bed while lying back putting his hands behind his head. Oh well, what do you want?
he asked.
I told Kiani that I was hungry and hot, and she told me to tell you,
Kellen said, pouting with her arms folded.
I heard Ms. Harrison say that breakfast will be ready soon, so why are you telling me?
Kareem asked while screwing his face up. She rolled her eyes. She went into the bathroom to brush her teeth then went downstairs for breakfast.
This was Ms. Harrison’s first family since she started helping children. They were the only children in the home. She got up every morning and makes them whatever they wanted for breakfast: mixed fruit, pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, orange juice, and/or cereal.
Kellen got downstairs first like always. Kareem was not too far behind. Ms. Harrison had to call for Kiani to come downstairs so they could all eat breakfast together.
As they all sat quietly around the table eating breakfast and caught up in their thoughts, Kellen said, Hey guys what are we doing today?
They all looked around and sighed.
Ms. Harrison said, I don’t know, the same thing we usually do. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll have a surprise for you guys later.
Kiani and Kareem nodded with excitement.
Since the global pandemic, everyone was extremely limited with what they could do and where they could go. The pandemic started back in March, where schools and businesses closed. Everyone had to wear a mask everywhere they went.
Parks and anything recreational were closed as well. Only essential things were open, like fast food restaurants, supermarkets, and hospitals. Some stores remained open if you entered with a mask on. You had to disinfect everything, and hand sanitizer became a normal part of life.
Things were starting to ease up a little bit now that infection rates have gone down in NYC. Some businesses and parks reopened.
Ms. Harrison made sure she kept the children up with their studies and hobbies, especially during this pandemic. Each day the children read for at least 30 minutes. She went with them every week to the local bookstore so that they could pick a book that they were interested in.
They all played 2 games of chess everyday. She gave them each a hard math problem to solve by the end of each day. While doing chores they would dance around the house to music. Later, they would go to the backyard and play basketball. At night, while making dinner, she sat with Kellen and helped her draw pictures of their family. Kareem usually watched Go Characters on his tablet while Kiani got lost in her laptop until dinner.
CHAPTER 2
Looking Back
KIANI, KAREEM, KELLEN,
Mom yelled as everyone came down the stairs. The children’s mom and dad were standing at the bottom of the stairs. They were dressed and were about to go out.
I know it’s last minute, but we have to run out to check up on something,
Dad said. Kiani, you’re in charge. Kareem we will finish discussing our issue when we get back.
Kareem stood there pouting with his arms folded. Make sure all you guys finish your homework by the time we get back.
Dinner is ready. You guys can eat in about 30 minutes.
Mom said. Make sure your homework is done before you eat. Then, take a bath, brush your teeth, floss, and go to bed. We should be back before bedtime. If we’re not, read and bed by 9.
She gave them all kisses and hugs.
Dad gave them all kisses on the forehead. Then they headed out the door into the car and pulled out of the driveway. The children did not know this would be the last time that they were going to see their parents. They also didn’t know that their lives would change forever.
Kareem stomped up the stairs, went into his room, and slammed the door. Kiani and Kellen went into their rooms
