    I first met Luigina around April 1981. She was the first cousin of my stepmother, Fiorella. My English mother had died in mid-1980 and after a few months of mourning, my f ather re-connected with an old flame he had met in Italy during World War II, when he was a sergeant in the British First Division. He fought at the first battle of Monte Cassino in 1943 and in January 1944 took part in the landings at Anzio, where he was recruited into British Military Intelligence. His commanding officer was Brigadier General W.R.C. Penney, and records show that the only Allied Intelligence unit operating out of Anzio was an American one, so presumably, my father was operating in

    coordination with American Military Intelligence.

    Shortly after Anzio he was sent to Sheffield for training in sabotage and explosives use. He mentioned that on one occasion he had met Barnes-Wallis, the British explosives expert there.
