Setting up a Routine/ Timetable.
Most people know what a timetable is, but not everybody, so I felt a duty to include it in this guide. Many people live by routine but when it comes to exercise, they over-complicate things, or set unrealistic goals for themselves. The human brain loves routine, but when there is a shock to the system, it gets confused.
Do too much training and you will always be tired, irritable and unable to concentrate; I’ve done it and been there. Not enough training and you won’t progress properly in any chosen activity; no real benefit is achieved. This is true with losing weight. most weight loss pills and plans do not work, because big businesses know that millions will give up in under six months.
Simplicity is the key to setting up a routine, with a sprinkle of common sense. In my experience, of all the martial arts styles I have done, twice a week is the perfect amount of times to start with Shorinkenjitsu, building up to four times maximum, after 1st Dan. Say, for example, you do running also. You need to plan a weekly timetable where you also have days off. I have included an example below:
Saturday: Running.
Sunday: Off.
Monday: Shorinkenjitsu.
Tuesday: Off.
Wednesday: Running.
Thursday: Shorinkenjitsu.
Friday: Off.
From the timetable like the one above you can get real benefits, if you just follow the routine. Change the days around if you want. Have a week off when you want. You are your own boss, but if you want results you have to boss yourself.
The only reason people achieve high ranks or great skill in martial arts, is that they continue to train. If you want to be a black belt, and you can train just twice a week, you will achieve your goals. Most people simply cannot be bothered to train, and so make excuses. Focus on the knowledge, rather than the grade level. When you are a green belt, try and be the best green belt you can be: this is the perfect attitude.
Training With a Partner: Do’s and Don’ts.
