My name is Barry Mansfield. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 8, 1948. I consider myself to be a philosophical poet. As I grew, I became more and more aware of the many problems that exist within our society. I have been published in several journals. One that comes to mind is a Journal for Ordinary Thought 2007, where my poem “The Way I Think” was first published. Also, in Northeastern’s Independent. Thrown Out of the Garden is my first book published this year. My poems are about the possibility of creating something good out of something that’s not so much. And although some of my poetry is purely personal, the greater amount is my meager efforts to explain and possibly alleviate, at least for some, the problems that we all face in our lives. I have been going to school for a very long time, trying to increase my understanding of the world in which we live so that I can help create, if I’m allowed to, a possible better future for as many as I can.

It may well be true, that we may face the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

and we might well be tempted to run away and hide pretend like it’s not happening

but I believe and conceive that this method of dealing with life will get you nowhere

so, my suggestion is take responsibility for the direction of your life

forgive yourself for what you perceive as your detrimental aspects

and begin to contemplate the meaning of compassion

as it relates to yourself and others

and I believe you will find that you can gain peace of mind

once you can perceive and believe

that you alone, are in control

and that you can set the final goal

which makes you one with the whole

that lets you know

you are soul

True Love

True love is an act of compassion and understanding

it puts no demands on others

and can truly never be expressed with words

it cannot be bought or sold

and must be given voluntarily not under duress or fake guilt

I have sympathy for the misery you cause yourself

I wish you well

but through your actions you cause yourself pain

this doesn’t have to be, you can be free

of karmas exacting penalty

it’s simple, just learn to be nice you’ll see

I has been fun, now it’s done to you I say ado

Thank you for the diversion

I don’t agree to be a slave of this insanity

waves of possibilities I can see

the reasons are simple the choices are vast

these moments in time, they are mine

I want my freedom back, I will not let insane malevolent beings

decide for me the path That I will take

I will awake, disregard their horrendous lies

this puppet is cutting its strings

I will keep on loving or at least I’ll try

I won’t even try to explain what’s happening or why

it’s up to you to figure that out

I refuse to listen to your screaming and yelling and the way you shout

you can be a puppet and a fool, quite frankly it’s up to you

but I will try with all my might to stop this craziness, clear my site

if we stick together and love and care

will break their hold, and be able to breathe
