    Foreword

This story is based on true events that occurred in recent years. The dates, places, and names were changed to protect the survivors and safeguard the security of all the inhabitants of our planet, especially the citizens of the United States of America. The findings and incredible discoveries that will be revealed must be safeguarded, as they could be very dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands.

The characters in this story look like you. They embody citizens who, over time, only wanted to protect us from the unknown and from the imminent danger that it meant for humanity; they are our anonymous heroes.

Ultimately, the human race is not prepared to interact with beings from other planets and distant galaxies. The infinite knowledge behind The Dyson Sphere is best kept out of the public eye, and it is that very few know these beings have influenced our lives for thousands of years without us imagining it.

The Dyson Sphere will open your eyes to a new world. You will discover events that governments have hidden for more than 150 years. Prepare to confront yourself and question everything you think you know and actually do know. Do it with a very open mind, because when you reach the end, you will understand that this story is just beginning.

    Episode 1

    The Woman of My Dreams

Talking with my father is a pleasure. He is a kind of encyclopedia with arms, legs, and glasses. When I tell him that, he gets mad at me. He maintains and defends that he is not intelligent, he simply has a trained mind. He not only knows about the universe and space, physics, and mathematics, he knows everything. But it’s history I like to talk to him about the most. And nothing would be more favorable, since tomorrow I will have my last regular presentation at the university, and it will be precisely to talk about its history. I was chosen from the next class to do it in the lecture hall before a very prestigious qualifying jury.

    You are nervous?

Never, Dad. You took it upon yourself to train me.

    He gets upset once more.

The history of this university is very particular. It is one of the best in the world in science, technology, and research. It was founded at the end of the nineteenth century and had many economic difficulties in the beginning. Getting accepted here was very difficult. Not even the fact that my dad was a professor and researcher for more than thirty years offered me any privilege. It depends on your academic indexes and the almost insane expression that you must demonstrate in terms of love, dedication, and motivation for science.

Son, this university is my life. I will retire once you enter the project we talked about some time ago, he repeats for the umpteenth time.

Dad, that project is a total enigma for me. Why do you keep saying you talked to me about it, if you didn’t?

He explains what it is about. Once again, he tells me that upon graduation, he will tell me the details.

    ***

The campus of the university was amazing in its majesty and organization. I decided to live on campus. My dad disagreed but allowed me to do so after a deep conversation. The dorm to which I was assigned was the most imposing, like an old hotel, with flawless, undulating brick walls and gleaming hallways It was so silent you could hear the computer keyboards and everyone’s breathing at night. Nobody rested there; nobody slept.

My room had a view of the Charles River, a giant that spanned the entire state of Massachusetts. Being in a private room was the only condition my dad forced me to accept. That negotiation taught me and helped me a lot. Definitely negotiate in life—it is important.

And of course, I had to fall in love….

I don’t know how it happened, but it happened. We were just in the first year of the race. I was studying computer science and she was studying physics. I had wanted to do physics too, but my dad directed me to take undergraduate computing and then do a master’s in physics. So I did it.

I always saw her there, sitting in the dining room, surrounded by people. She seemed popular and had an everlasting smile. I usually walked alone—I didn’t do anything other than study—until the day she came up to me while I was having lunch and reading at the same time. I knew right away that she was going to be the love of my life.

Hi! How are you? she asked.

    Hi, yeah, I said.

    What’s your name?

    Raymond Bernard. And you?

Nice to meet you, my name is Kate.

    Kate what?

Does my last name matter to you?

    Excuse me. It doesn’t matter.

    You study computers, right?

Yes, how do you know? I asked, puzzled.

Because I know who you are.

    Oh. And who am I?

    Raymond Bernard.

Sure, I just told you that.

Sorry. Raymond Bernard, Jr., I wanted to say.

That answer made me both proud and envious. The most beautiful woman in college, and the one I had already chosen as the love of my life, knew me because I was the son of Raymond Bernard.

And how do you know I am his son?

We all know. Above all, those of us who study physics. He is the best professor in this university. And as we know, the most important researcher, and also cofounder of the most ambitious and secret project in our country.

I was shocked. Apparently, the project my dad was referring to was known more than he imagined. My jealousy grew exponentially.

And what do you know about that project?

Not much. But we would love to know more. You know it? She approached me and asked in a hinting tone.

That was enough to get me up and going. I sensed that her approach was meant only to learn more about the project, and I was not going to allow her to use me.

The next day she eagerly looked for me to apologize. I listened to her and forgave her. So much so that in two days, but four years later, it will be our act and graduation party, and I haven’t stopped thinking about her for a single day. But to be honest with myself, I’m not sure my love has been fully reciprocated.

    Episode 2

    A Mysterious Visitor

Every morning we would meet in the university gardens to talk about our thesis work, the graduation ceremony, and of course, the big party. At just twenty-two, we had managed to finish the undergraduate degree in just four years and start a master’s degree as listeners from the third year. We were always very intrigued as to why they offered us something so unusual. I am convinced they forced us to do it without realizing it. It was as if they had a plan for us. The five geeks—that’s what they called us and our friends.

What we liked to talk about the most was our future plans. They were all quite dissimilar. Jason, for example, wanted to assimilate into the military and defend our country in any war with his extensive knowledge of telecommunications. He imagined himself in the middle of the desert installing communication antennas and in the middle of a chase. I thought he suffered from epic delusions.

Michael, for his part, wanted to study law. He dreamed of the solemn attire of judges in court and in defense of the law. In college he was the student spokesperson, and was even on the verge of being expelled for his irreverence and talkativeness. His outstanding grades and brilliant potential as a researcher and professor opened up spaces of salvation for him.

Robert had less ambitious plans. He just wanted to take over the family business. We got tired of explaining to him that it was a waste of talent, that he should take advantage of his gifts in a large corporation. Until one day he gave us a lesson that I will never forget, because of the simplicity and forcefulness of his phrase. I am not going to waste my talent in a corporation. I’d rather waste it on the business my parents started twenty years ago, with which they managed to pay for me to attend this university.

And my beloved Kate, who just wanted to get out of her world. She felt so small that she wanted to shake it off, travel, go on adventures, and get to know other cultures. She confessed to me one day that she always made an effort in her studies to please her family and make them proud of her, but that her real dream was to first live life, and then, only later, to become a NASA astronaut. .

One day before graduation, while we were talking in the same place as always, a gentleman approached us. After engaging in conversation by asking us questions—to which he seemed to already know the answers—he told us that his name was John and he was coming to offer us jobs that we could not refuse.

I am a talent scout, for a world-renowned research and innovation company, looking for bright young people and recent graduates, like you, to offer them the best employment opportunities. What many people would call the dream job, which can only be carried out successfully by enterprising youth, full of dreams and with a clear vision of their futures. Here is my card. Soon I will be contacting you all.

We were amazed. It was very strange the way he had approached us. Something in his attitude told me he knew us. It was clear he had investigated us and did not come to us by chance. We kept his card, and John mysteriously withdrew as he had arrived, without prior notice.

The days went by very fast. They were like the rain in the summer, and the only things we thought about were our thesis presentation, graduation, and going home with the family, after not being with them for so long.

The day had come. My presentation was outstanding and worthy of publication—that was qualified by the jury. The theme I chose raised many concerns. I worked on a simulation model in quantum computing on the speed of light and space time. Sometimes I felt like it was a very redundant choice, that I was looking to stand out and be recognized by my father and by Kate. And I did it.

All my friends also had outstanding grades. We were very happy and proud of ourselves, as we had put in a lot of effort, and it was rewarded. We were closing an important cycle in our lives.

On the day of our graduation, between dress suits, crying for joy, dances, and a certain excess, we continued to delve into the depths—with a few too many drinks—of the paths we had chosen. At times I believe that deep down there were overlapping claims between us, as if we did not agree with what each one of us had decided and we weren’t able to say so. I think the fear of not seeing, and even forgetting each other, frightened us, and in a way, we were burdened by so much weight on our shoulders.

We were talking a little distance away from the deafening music when suddenly we saw
