PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL
Chapter One
Alright, Kip. Time to go into your stable,
Aaron said to his horse as he gently tugged at its reins. Aaron walked besides Kip quietly but quick in pace as the sky above was becoming dark with rain clouds. He could already smell the scent of rain in the air; a scent he was all too enamored with. It reminded him of the day he and his wife, Sarah, were married over seven years ago, in the middle of a thunderstorm. The claps of thunder during their Amish wedding ceremony were so loud that at times, they were unable to hear the words spoken by the bishop. For over seven years, Aaron and Sarah had attempted to conceive a child. Sadly, with no success—until now. Many months they waited to see the results of their work but Sarah’s cycle never ceased; the dreaded cycle that filled them both with feelings of incompetence and disappointment. The fact that their friends got pregnant on the first time sometimes gave them a tiny bit of envy, although, they were always happy for anybody who was able to enjoy such a blessing. A few weeks ago, Sarah’s dreaded cycle did not reset and her monthly visitor missed its appearance. When this occurred, their mind did not automatically think about the cause being a pregnancy. Although they had always remained hopeful, it simply did not seem possible. They were convinced that their last attempt had been successful when Sarah, who was always healthy as a horse, became extremely ill. A pelvic exam performed by their Amish settlement’s midwife confirmed that Sarah was indeed with child.
As Aaron removed the bridle from Kip’s head he thought about how life would change once their child was born and was filled with gratefulness. All of those years of pain from being unable to procreate vanished the moment they found out about their baby. Aaron was definitely excited about what the future held for him and his growing family. He picked up a brush from a pail and brushed Kip’s mane. When he was finished, he draped a green blanket over the horse’s back. Then, he quickly made his way back inside the farmhouse expecting Sarah to greet him so lovingly as she usually did. As soon as Aaron shut the door behind him the rumbling started from the skies. The fire was going in the fireplace but Sarah was nowhere to be seen or heard.
Sarah?
Aaron called out to the silent house. He went to the kitchen thinking Sarah was still preparing dinner but she was not there. He called out again. The house stood eerily quiet, something was wrong—he knew it. He slowly started to make his way around their home, opening doors expecting to find Sarah. He called out to Sarah, this time more frantically. It was highly unusual for Sarah to not be home at this time. Finally, he stepped into their bedroom which was located towards the very back of the house. The bathroom door was slightly opened and he could see dim candlelight. Aaron pushed the door open to find Sarah sitting with her head in her hands on the bathroom floor in her nightgown. She was crying.
Sarah, what’s wrong?
Aaron asked her bending down next to her. Then, he saw. Sarah was sitting in a pool of her own blood.
Oh, god, Sarah. What happened? Did you hurt yourself?
Something is wrong with the baby. All of a sudden I just started bleeding profusely,
Sarah said through
